We just spent Christmas up in a huge luxury home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. (North Georgia).
It was my young SIL's idea.
We ALL contributed in some fashion EXCEPT my BIL.
Even the teenagers that were capable.
My personal tradition, Charcuterie dinner on Christmas Eve. But I really didn't do much as my in-laws wholeheartedly have embraced this tradition and gone gangbusters over it. I love it. I feel so loved and accepted by them it makes me want to cry from joy. My Dad got to go with us to this mansion in the mountains. Been a few years since we celebrated this way. He has wanted Christmas with a huge family and never had been around one before and now finally he has gotten my In-Laws as his own and he was the photographer taking lots of pictures.
BIL contributed nothing except being a loudmouth jerk. (There's always one)
Everyone contributed what they could with food, activities, entertainment and etc. I was the Chef but OK I didn't hog all the kitchen duties. I did breakfast on 3 mornings. Of course dinner that first night. Homemade cinnamon rolls, raspberry star bread, dinner rolls and loaf bread. Spiral sliced ham, potato soup, deli meats for sandwiches, orange juice for sick kids, breakfast casserole, and a dozen bath towels (walmart run) because the house was short on them.
Now we paid over half the cost for the rental and took the master bedroom suite....because there was a coffee pot and balcony. (I get up very early every morning) the other bedrooms and bathrooms were big and handy enough.
BIL at the last minute shafted us on his portion of the cash because he bought a $300 toolbox for himself to use with his dozen other toolboxes. Then proceeds on Christmas night and the following morning to put my wife (his sister( in her place lambasting her over manufactured offenses....cussing her out and using the term for female dogs over a dozen times.
I did not step in because to me, it was obvious why he was doing that. Plus....it's siblings. Do NOT EVER get in those. Plus my dad was there....
I like my BIL's second wife. She is sweet and kind and extremely respectful and respectable. And I feel horrible for her....and she is going to create an exit strategy soon. Unfortunately we get stuck with him in the coming divorce. (He can't see it) I liked BIL's first wife too. She wasn't that smart but she was nice and kind and generous too.
My wife feels guilty and even though there literally was nothing she did, could have done differently, or can do to fix it....she still wants to take responsibility. Wants to fix the situation. And she can't.
The kids were all crying and most of the women were too. Nice trip ruined by BIL.
(It took a chunk out of my retirement too)
*sigh**
