Primary industries are essential for both the running of a country and for trading with other countries. Primary industries generate the materials for secondary industries to exist and grow. Without the earnings from the workforce in the primary and secondary industries, there is no way of paying to run governments or local councils, or for the monies to be spent in products being sold in the tertiary industries. Tertiary industries are retail stores and services and any government form of employment or contractors being paid by the government. (Secondary industries are manufacturing while primary industries are mining and farming etc).
Now anyone who works in a government position or contracting to a government position (Anyone who gets paid by ones government for ones employment), even though they pay their fair share of taxes, are contributing nothing to the economic prosperity of the country and here is why. It is the wealth raised through taxing those that work in the private industries that they are employed by, either directly or indirectly, so their taxes do not generate any wealth as taxing something that has been paid for by tax does nothing. You may as well reduce their wages and not tax them as it is cheaper then generating extra employment to sift through their tax returns!
In Wales (Part of the UK) because we are not currently able to survive financially, as we have very few primary industries and the few we have survive of grants!!!!, we are basically bankrupt. Over 65% of employment in Wales comes from government employed positions like council workers, teachers, police, firemen, ambulance and the NHS etc.
What private employment there is, this comes mainly in the retail and service industry which cannot support itself without primary industries (Mining, farming etc...Producing raw materials) and the secondary industries (Manufacturing...Transforming the raw materials into a use able product) as without the customers from these two industries, the retail and service industry would collapse, as it is not self supporting! Take a shop workers pay. Reduce it by tax. Spend it in a shop. The profits to keep the shop running dont come out of thin air. Each worker would earn less and less and need to work harder and harder until total collapse!
Now add unemployed to the situation and one realises there is no way at all that in Wales we can survive independently as we now are without massive change to our outlook. Now the UK as a whole are in a similar situation. We are being propped up with loans and grants (Loans with minimum or no interest but have enslaving conditions attached to them). I believe that this is the chief reason why our UK government is panicking and does not really want to be in power when we dont commit fully (We never voted to join the EU so we were never full members) to be part of the EU.
Now the further in the EU we became the more enslaved regulations stifled our primary and secondary industries, hence we started to become slaves or addicted to EU control.
To break free needs Gods help as it is like breaking free from a drug when you dont remember what life was without searching for your next fix! You dont remember how to live to support yourself. Now I believe Britain (And many other countries are in this position today. Stifled by unions who are eager to protect workforce in government generated workforce positions, (As few workers outside government paid positions can afford to be a union member)), and stifled through imaginary, or self sustaining pollution controls which cause more pollution then if one had no controls!
Also it would mean a huge move back to the land in both farming and mining etc, along with new industries so raw products can be converted back into good use. I forgot to say before that every import we make that we could produce here takes wealth out of our own country. So even if it cost more to make something in ones own country, it i s far better for ones own economy in the long run if one does. (For years China resisted importing for this reason. It employed people and it stopped their wealth going into foreigners hands. They worked hard with little pay for years and today they are reaping their rewards massively!)
I hope this explains a few concepts which explain why countries prospor or fail financially.

I kind of agree with you, and kind of don't. After all, how did countries become countries before they figured out they even had something worth mining? And what were you expecting when the product mined was no longer in the earth to take? (Wales is coal, right? What happens when you run out of coal?)

Countries change. There was a UK before "industrial" described an age. There was even an America before then. How did we make it without mines? We traded! (Kind of the big beef America had with England at the time. They were over taxing us on the trading we were doing, and not letting us have our say in it.)

Now, being American, I don't keep up on the goings on with other countries, but wasn't Ireland making a comeback with a new thing to trade? Something about computer technology. Enough to make the Irish that had to leave return. What became of that? Sounds like it didn't last. Why not? My guess is because your government over taxes people. Why make 100,000 a year, if the government will take the vast majority of it? To give you a small bit of what you could have afford to pay for yourself at the whole bit, if you hadn't been taxed so much?

The truth is, the world is coming out of two ages now -- the Industrial Age and the self-reliant age. We're running out of what was being mined, and because of mining practices, we're running out of farming land too. Too many people to sustain self-sufficiency, unless you think killing everyone at age 30 is a good idea. (Check my age, to see why I'd disagree. lol)

I know most of America's lambs come from New Zealand, our coffee comes from Columbia, as do most of our bouquets, and our rum comes from the very place you left us with -- the Caribbeans. (Sorry, apparently we preferred rum over tea. Don't look at me. I don't like either. lol) We still get our chickens, lettuce, grain, and most of our veggies from this country, but we're never going to trust your cows.

China has screwed everyone over the steel. But we are a world-trading society now, so we're going to have to work together. If you want your country to do better, offer something the world wants. And get over thinking you can do it on your own... unless even you aren't fond of tea.

Y'all over there are doing something my country is fighting against. We've seen how you fill potholes with one man and one hunk of machinery. Very cool, but over here that's translates to four men out of work. You don't like the end of the industrial age? We don't even more so. Figure out how to deal with this age -- the computer age. Figure out what comes next for your country. Stop relying on your government, (and we agree there), and figure out what next. Because honestly, all of us First World Nations are having the same problem. How do you keep millions and millions of people employed when you don't need that many people to do physical labor? It's not industry. Industry has been farmed out to the countries who haven't used up all their ore yet -- third world countries. It's going to be some service that can be exported and the whole world needs.

We have/had Bill Gates and Steve Job. Unfortunately, China has us now because they sold us the components to make the technology. (And they do have us. China owns us more than the US does.)

We all have to think globally now, because we're all falling apart from the last age. I've got no answers. I just know isolationism isn't the answer. We still sell Hawaiian shirts here, but only the rich are buying the $90 American-made shirts. Most of us are buying third-world nation knockoffs.

(BTW, you'll be happy to know most of us know where Wales is. Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Christian Bales may be some of your better exports. lol)

We'll let you have Catherine, Anthony and Christian.... :p

Reality is Wales is still rich in coal, and many different ores of various kinds. Geology wize, Wales has been described as a mini USA because if you take all the different ores under the ground in the vast are of the USA, we have them all in a small country. Mind you, getting at them isn't so easy!
Most of the coal round here is of a very high grade anthracite and used to burn (When we mined it) with very little smoke. An example of the quality was that about 25-30 years ago my mum was exploring near an old drift mine as she had seen it on an old map. The map was around 100 years old. She stood above the mine entrance itself without knowing it, and walked round to view the mine. Yes, it was filled in about 50-100 yards down with various junk. She didn't go in as old coal mines are mostly mined into earth with wooden pit props made from pine trees and have a low life expectancy due to damp. I was young then. Some waste coal was abandoned around the floor and my mum gathered some coal. At least she could make the walk worthwhile having enough to keep the fire going for short while... One or two pieces the miners had left were like anthracite but they were not. My mum picked them up to examine them, and seeing they were not going to do anything on the fire, she chucked them.
Years later (About a week or two ago) my mum put two and two together. What she had chucked was pure jet. And it wasn't small pieces but hand sized pieces. The miners themselves wouldn't have kept it as it was anthracite they were after.

Wales is full of various ores and minerals but today we have so much restrictive red tape, if we sold the red tape we'd be a rich nation! We have copper, zink, silver, lead, coal (Mostly anthracite), slate, granite, sandstone, iron ores of top quality, good quality gold (Hence why the Romans mined in Wales many years ago. They also mind silica near here to make bricks), good grades of clay, and many others. Locally we have very fine sand which tends to silt up the old harbours and docks, but I rather think there would be a good market to sell it. There is a local sand dredger, but they are not allowed to take local sand! It would solve the silted up harbour issue and estuary if they were allowed. Seems common sense isn't our strong point.
A beach near here was the ballast dumping ground for the returning ships after exporting anthracite, lead, silver, copper, iron etc from our local harbour a century ago. Due to the vast amountsnof different types and colours of this ballast as it came from a great many places, tourists and geologists would love to come to see it. Yet our local council decided they wanted to make it more touristy, and the fine sand they took from the harbour, they dumped on top of these stones so the stones are now not visible. It is a sandy beach now. Sadly many now miss those stones and the vastly different shades of colours. Browns, blues, pinks, greens, yellows, whites, blacks. Very few colours could not be seen. Some were stripy. A few even contained gold. I guess we need to wait until the fine sand is washed back into the harbour...:D
