I used to wonder what it was that really sets apart, in terms of showing love, Christians and those who do not know Christ. I know a lot of people who are not Christians who are very kind people, whom I have seen performing acts of love and kindness to those around them. Then it hit me; it's REALLY easy to show love and kindness to people in need, whether you're Christian or not. It's REALLY easy to donate money to charity, or to starving people in third world countries. It's REALLY easy to pay the bill when out to lunch with a friend or family member because you know they can't afford it. It's REALLY easy to drop a dollar into the cup of a homeless person as you walk by. It's REALLY easy to hold open a door for someone, or give someone a smile or compliment. However, it's not so easy to show love to someone who butts in line, or cuts you off in traffic. It's not easy to show love to those who are viewed as annoying or arrogant. It's not easy to show love to someone who spends all of their money on drugs and/or alcohol and is wasted everywhere they go. It's not easy to show love to thieves or arsonists. It's not easy to show love to bad people; people who make bad mistakes. People like rapists, pedophiles and murderers. I believe that God can move in the heart of anyone at anytime; so what happens when people like this suddenly have their eyes and hearts opened, and they genuinely repent? The world says, "it's just an act" or, "how dare you claim to have been forgiven; how dare you claim you're going to Heaven. There is no forgiveness for you. You deserve death; you deserve to go to Hell". The world cannot show love to people like this because the world does not know the kind of love that can only be known when you know Christ; that Agape love. True, many Christians will still struggle with showing this kind of love. But we have it in us because we have Christ in us. So, you see, the difference between Christians and those who do not know Christ is not just the way we love people; it is the way we love the unlovable.
