to be a GODLY lady it takes following GOD wholeheartly, and be respectful of everyone weather or not they deserve it obvisly stand up for yourself when required but do it respectful. also show the world GOD'S love through you.
one thought to keep in mind is to treat others the way you would want to be treated.

I don't know whether to be amazed or disturbed by guys knowing what it means to be a lady...

I do kind of agree with duchessaimee to an extent. There's a moment in Mere Christianity where C.S. Lewis discusses the term "Gentleman", and in association with how aimee discussed "lady" it did not start off as a description of character, but it was simply a social status. One could be a raving, abusive drunk and still be a gentleman, and I assume the same would be true in regards to a lady.

However times do change and so do meanings, and like these new definitions or not they are what people know and understand. I do think there was a level of manners and respectability required of the social statuses at some point, in which case the term, would not be completely misused.

If people truly believe that being a lady or gentleman is a thing of the past, it could explain why so many people don't bother teaching their children manners anymore. How incredibly sad.

Being a lady is pretty big for me. I've always thought my mother was a perfect example of this. She has grace, modesty, patience, the heart of a servant(for the Lord) and the strength to turn the other cheek. It is one of the most difficult things to accomplish but I promise I try everyday to be like this and to be the kind of person that my future children can look up to :)

A lady is not necesarrily a godly woman but a godly woman can (and should) be a lady. What does being ''a lady'' mean? As I undestand it, it's something along the lines of what other women on here said. Being gracious, modest and prudent. It doesn't mean that a lady can't have a sense of humor, or that she has to wear high heels everywhere she goes, or that she never burps. It just means that she discerns the occasion and the people around her. It would be ridiculous to wear high heels, and tons of jewelry and makeup if you are going hiking. The idea is that you can be a lady everywhere.

Also, as others pointed out, the term ''lady'' doesn't even exist in the Bible, but the way society describes a lady nowadays I think it sort of fits part of the description of the proverbs 31 woman.

1 Tim 9:1-10
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

Jer 4:30
And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in scarlet, that you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life

1 Peter 3:3-4
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is .

You have misinterpreted these three texts. They are not speaking against the wearing of jewellery. They are merely condemning placing your confidence in your external adornment. Women throughout scripture have worn jewellery (Genesis 24:47, Isaiah 61:10). Yes it must be done modestly, but again, the outward distinction between the genders must be there.

Im not surprised that biblical woman hood and all that it entails is not a popular concept here. But a failure to adhere to all the guidelines for women in scripture has been the source of so many problems in evangelicalism today, for example, the absence of equal numbers of men. Ever since the feminist movement we have seen an explosion in

1) WOMEN TEACHERS. There is something deep inside a Christian man that should, and in most cases will, make him feel uncomfortable submitting to female spiritual leadership.

2) THE TONGUES SENSATION. Scripture teaches that tongues was a gift given in the apostolic era only, thus it no longer exist. The 'babbling' we have today has no spiritual value and therefore is purely emotionally driven. A simple understanding in the difference between the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone esterogen with regards to fluctuations show us that women naturally are more likely to respond to experiences that stir their emotions.

3) THEOLOGICALLY DEFICIENT BUT HIGHLY EMOTIONALLY DRIVEN WORSHIP MUSIC.

The above 3 issues make it very uncomfortable for most men, christian or not, to sit through you average evangelical service. Still, many of the women who champion such concepts will have the cheek to say something like 'there are not enough men in the church so I am forced to date outside the church'.

Let's stop buying into culture, get back to scripture, and then the church might become as powerful as God deigned it to be.

I agree with you on your other points but I totally disagree with you that tongues were only spoken during the apostolic era.

I knew it. I have too much estrogen. :(

I did not misinterpret anything. Did you not even read what I typed in that post? I never condemned makeup, jewelry, fashion or anything. I never said the bible spoke against it either. The passages are talking about vanity like I mentioned. Dressing to attract attention is not how a lady should dress. Outward adornmnet is NOT what makes a lady. Most men I know prefer a "natural beauty" than one that has to "work" at looking good and possibly misrepresenting herself.
I also mentioned I don't have to wear makeup and jewelry to look like a female. Gold, diamonds, and lipstick isn't what defines me. It isn't what makes me a woman. BTW, I really cant wear jewelry. I am allergic to almost all metal. Does that mean I want to dress like a man or I am less of a woman? No.

I also don't know what it is with you and this whole feminist thing. Not every woman is that way.

I don't expect men to submit to me, and I don't play the role of a leader. I expect men to be MEN.
I don't speak in tongues either. EVER! I agree they have ceased.

You do seem to have an issue with women in general, and placing alot of blame for the shortcomings of the church on women. That is rather far fetched.

I don't disagree. regardless of what term is used manners and proper behavior are a must.

That is simply not true, 'true womanhood' is defined by God on the pages of scripture, not by other women. Jude 3 calls all believers to proclaim the truth of scripture thus all believers should be able to define 'a lady' biblically. If you work through scripture there are 15 re-occurring principles that define womanhood.

THE 15 HALLMARKS OF BIBLICAL WOMANHOOD

SHE WILL:

in Conduct:
1) Abstain from gossip (Titus 2:3)
2) Stay pure from sexual immorality (Proverbs 31:5, Titus 2:5)
3) Operate on principle, not impulse (proverbs 31:26, Titus 2:5)
4) Teach other women (Proverbs 30:31)

in Marriage:
5) Speak well of her husband (proverbs 12:4)
6) Be Gentle (1 Peter 3:4)
7) Be submissive (1 Peter 3:6, Ephesians 5:24, Proverbs 25:24. Esther 1:20)
8) Be passionate for her husband (Song of Solomon 5:10-16)

In Parenthood
9) Work at home (Proverbs 31:15, Titus 2:5)
10) Be loving (Titus 2:5)
11) Work hard (Proverbs 31)
12) Discipline (Proverbs 13:24)

In Appearance:
13) Be distinctively feminine: (Song of Solomon 1:10-12, Deuteronomy 22:5)

In Church
14) Learn and not teach (1 Timothy 2:12, 1 Corinthians 14:34)

But mostly, and above all, she will:

15) FEAR THE LORD

Sean,

It is great that you are using scripture to support your viewpoint. More people should do that. I would l ike toadd that it is also important to examine the context of the verses you are quoting to get the bigger picture. Sometimes it is necessary, sometimes it is not.

For example, my interpretation of these scriptures you have quoted is not: women should never operate in church leadership nor should they ever teach men in church. That is not what these verses say. This confusion has caused alot of unecessary oppression, division and descention in the body.

If you will reread all of 1 Timothy 2 you will see that your reference to 1Tim 2:12 is about when people should speak out when someone is addressing the whole congregation. It is also important to understand the culture of the time to understand the point being made here. Jewish men and women were taught differently. Jewish boys from the time they are 3 were taught in a group of boys only by men and the girls stayed home with their moms. The women didn't have the benefit of this study in the church and therefore were eagerly wanting to talk about it when they were in church. And they had many urgent questions.

In this context you could see why this needed to be addressed, Paul was talking about order; it is about women interrupting the service. He was speaking about order in the church, about who should be speaking publically for the benefit of all. Then he tells the women if they have questions they should ask their husbands at home (because the men have gone to school and have more knowledge). In this context it makes sense that women should not teach things they don't know.

We have all been in bible studies or in a church service when a pastor or teacher has given the floor to someone who is a new Christian who thinks they know it all and proceeds to try and tell everyone else (their elders included) what the TRUE meaning of the scriptures entail. Or they take up everyone's time by asking countless questions. When Paul is referring to 1Tim 2:12 "...suffer a woman not to teach, nor to usurp authority over a man, but to be in silence" this is what he means.

Again this same principle is reiterated in your reference to (1Cor14:34)
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

but followed by....(1Cor14:35-36)which talks about when you should speak out in a public forum without knowledge exhalting yourself above the leaders (who, at the time, were exclusively male)
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

Can anyone imagine if we never learned anything from women what would happen to our world? our families? Our schools? Mother's are the first and most important teachers of children. And some of them are male. Boys don't stop learning from their parents when they become adults. Boys don't learn only from their Dad's. And neither do men. Jesus himself amazed the synagog elders with his scriptural knowledge at a young age. Who taught him these scriptures? His mom.

The only evidence I can find in the bible for women coming under a man's authority is in the home as his wife. And I whole-heartedly agree with that. Men need to be in charge in their own homes. Unfortunately, much of this is being distorted now with the fallout from divorce and broken homes. It is very confusing for women too.

My point is: oppressing women was never God's intention. And not speaking or teaching in church is as it says in scripture accoridng to the LAW. As christians we are no longer under the old testament man-made laws. Every good leader knows that oppressing the people who are created to love and support is a very bad idea. Men and women are very different and I, for one, am very happy about the differences. But men and women were designed to also be teammates. Squishing your teammate makes the whole team weaker.

[h=3]New Testament (under the new covenant, not the law) reference regarding all women (not just wives) not to have authority over any men (not just husbands) in any of the churches (not a specific church where some women were misbehaving as some claim) Paul had planted.

Note: boys are not men.

1 Timothy 2[/h]
2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— [SUP]2 [/SUP]for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. [SUP]3 [/SUP]This is good, and pleases God our Savior, [SUP]4 [/SUP]who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. [SUP]5 [/SUP]For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, [SUP]6 [/SUP]who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. [SUP]7 [/SUP]And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.
[SUP]8 [/SUP]Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. [SUP]9 [/SUP]I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, [SUP]10 [/SUP]but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. [SUP]12 [/SUP]I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. [SUP]13 [/SUP]For Adam was formed first, then Eve. [SUP]14 [/SUP]And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. [SUP]15 [/SUP]But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

A lady is respectful and full of graciousness. Not prone to things that would tarnish her. She is wise in her time with people, loving any that come to her, but discerning of those who won't readily listen. She will not be prone to argument, instead shelving the natural prideful ways. She would speak gently, without coarse words or jokes. She would not be prone to childish whining or seeking of pity. She would hold her head high when others look down on her, not by her own achievement, but by trust in God. She would be considerate, and faithful to those she loves. She would not jump blindly into any type of relationship, instead wisely separating into roles. She would be adorned primarily with the beauty the Lord has given her, understanding that there are those who will appreciate her beauty not just for her decorations. She will not live her life only to find herself a man, but by the Lord's will.

On the whole femininity thing, a woman will be comparatively feminine, if the man is masculine. If a girl wearing jeans and a tank top is confused with the man standing next to her, who's fault is that? First clue is when you ask her to open jars for you. At that point, do a couple push ups, maybe eat some beef... put some rogaine on your chest if you must.

Oops…I forgot something. In verses 13 and 14, the sole reason Paul gives is not that the women were uneducated or ill behaved, nor does he say anywhere that this would be subject to cultural influences at some point. If anyone finds actual scripture (not commentary) to the contrary, please let me know. The sole reason he gives is this one, which has nothing to do with education or culture:

[SUP]13 [/SUP]For Adam was formed first, then Eve. [SUP]14 [/SUP]And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

Oh...and please...no one start that tired old "Deborah was a judge" argument, which WAS under the Old Covenant/law...unless you also think only Levites can be pastors. :) We still have female judges under the law, but they are not pastors of churches. It's apples and oranges. :)

(Can you tell this topic has gotten very old over the past 25 years for me. :) )

I wonder if being a lady is dependent on how men treat us to begin with- or- if how we act/present ourselves influences how we are treated by men. In other words, are there men who want to treat woman as ladies these days? Maybe it is a bad sampling (I know not all guys are like this), but i've encountered a few guys (christian and non-christian) who do not treat woman as they should be treated in my opinion. In the past, I've had a few guy-friends who viewed me as 'one of the guys', and would treat other girls more respectively. It made me think 'What?! Am i chop liver here?!' Do we teach men how to treat us? A part of me thought that I should begin to expect more out of men, and out of myself. We can't demand respect, but I think we can foster the environment for it. Are my expectations too high? Or not high enough? It is too much to ask to be treated like a lady?

I don't know about the other guys but for me it definitely depends on how the girl conducts herself and how she dresses. Don't get me wrong, if you want to be loud, show alot of skin and get drunk and rowdy (lots of girls like that where I live, it's a cultural thing) I'll still show respect.....but I'm not going to be showing much more courtesy than I would show a guy.
