Before I begin, I respect Stephen Hawking as a scientists, however in matters of philosophy, he shows how inept he is. Furthermore, I think that all Christians should pray for this man because I see a man desperately trying to avoid the God hypothesis, and one who need Christ.

When I first seen it advertised that the Discovery Channel was going to be asking the question Does God exist? in a show called Curiosity, I was elated. This feeling dissipated once I heard that Prof. Stephen Hawking was going to narrate the show because I was familiar with his views due to his book entitled The Grand Design. I disagreed with Prof. Hawking on at least 3 occasions.

1) Nothing caused the Big Bang

It seems to me that since the Big Bang is the beginning of the universe and that it doesn't have a cause then the universe doesn't either.

If this analysis is correct, then that is the same as saying that our universe came from nothing. This is absurd, for out of nothing nothing comes. And I bet no one reading this is worried for a moment that a lion has just popped into being out of nothing behind you and is ready to devour you. But suppose that things could just pop into being out of nothing, it then becomes inexplicable as to why everything and anything don't just pop into being out of nothing. This raises a few questions, namely, why don't people, soda, computers, or lamps just pop into being out of nothing? If things such as people, lamps, soda, or computers can't pop into existence from nothing, how can a universe which is composed of the very things that make up these things just pop into being out of nothing? Why assume that the universe is the exception to something coming from nothing? Finally, this goes against our experience of how reality works. When is the last time, say, a book just appeared from absolutely nothing? Or a book? Imagine for a moment such a thing did happen would you believe a person that told you a book came from nothing? Of course not! Claims such as these would be scoffed at and the person making such assertions would be thought of as crazy.

Prof. Hawking attempts to show how things can pop into being out of nothing by appealing to the so called, "Virtual Particles" which seemingly come from nothing as well as negative particles. Now due to my ignorance of the latter, I'll only be addressing the former which Dr. William Lane Craig addresses quite adequately, and I quote:

"Virtual Particles do not come into being uncaused out of nothing, virtual particles appear in the Quantum Vacuum which is a sea of fluctuating energy. It is a rich physical reality which is endowed with a structure and is governed by physical laws." ‪Don't Virtual Particles Prove Something Can Come From Nothing?‬‏ - YouTube

Thus, these particles aren't coming from nothing and Prof. Hawking's given reason for things popping into being out of nothing falls apart.

2) The role that time had at the beginning of the universe is, I believe the final key to removing the need for a grand designer and revealing how the universe created itself. - Minute 51

Let me begin by saying, this quote contradicts the previous quote in which Prof. Hawking said that the Big Bang, or the universe has no cause. The idea of self-causation is internally incoherent and should not be taken seriously. To say that the universe created itself implies it's own existence in order to make itself exist! To illustrate, its like saying that before I existed, I caused my own existence. But I had to exist before I existed to cause my own existence!

If the universe has no cause, how can the universe be self-caused simultaneously?

3) You can't get to a time before the Big Bang because there was no before the Big Bang. We have finally found something that doesn't have a cause because there was no time for a cause to exist in. For me, this means there is no time for a creator to have existed.

If God exists and created the universe out of nothing He would transcend time in the first place. So I do not see how this objection shows negates God as the creator of the universe.

Did you send this reply to him, im sure he has some sort of public mail.

Not yet, but I am going to send it to the Discovery Channel in hopes of them reading it and allowing someone else to answer this question of Did God create the universe.

Well done Hyvent.

As you say if the universe has no cause, nothing is here, which is absurd as you say.

I have been thinking how this is the most fundamental hypocracy I can think of in science as its foundational premise of demonstateable proof is founded on the simple single fact of cause and effect. To say the universe has no cause is no longer science.

You would think they would be only occupied studying the universe to learn more about the causer.

To me their very next move is a big hypocracy too. Imperical investigation says presume nothing.

So why would they assume there WAS a beginning?

I don't.

Isn't the big bang theory about a huge ball of matter that exploded? Did that ball create itself, or was it created by something? Just a thought.

Isn't the big bang theory about a huge ball of matter that exploded? Did that ball create itself, or was it created by something? Just a thought.

not quite...

observations of stars & galaxies all over the sky reveal that the entire universe seems to be expanding - and from this and other lines of inquiry, it appears that it's not just 'matter' expanding, but space itself. the picture is not, the universe is an enormous empty room, and there was an explosion in the middle of it, and all the stuff that blew up is flying apart into the empty room. the picture is, the room itself is expanding, and everything is in it.
so working backwards from what's seen the 'big bang' theory arises under the assumption that the further backwards in time you go, the less 'expanded' the cosmos was... go so far back, and the cosmos was a single point - the math of the physics itself ((so far as mankind understands it)) points actually to a point with zero dimensions.

.. which i think is beautiful, actually, because it means observation tells us that all of creation seems to have originated in a single place. scripture tells us God spoke, and what He spoke, became existent. as though His mouth - a single point - is the origin of all creation :)

so what you said, "huge ball of matter that exploded" -- no, not quite. infinitely tiny point of all the matter and energy and space that exists, which was stretched out. ((and technically, no such thing as matter at that point in time, because of the heat and pressure of being infinitely dense.. below a certain diameter, the physics as we know it completely breaks down: it is not in itself an origin theory, and cannot possibly be, and this is obvious to anyone who comprehends the physics, but it is a theory of 'soon after the origin'))

It wasn’t so much a Big Bang but a Big Word :)

Genesis 1:3 NKJV
[3] Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

2 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV
[6] For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness,
who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the
glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

John 1:1,3-5 NKJV
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. [3] All things were made through Him, and without Him
nothing was made that was made. [4] In Him was life, and the life was
the light of men. [5] And the light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness did not comprehend it.

Revelation 19:13 NKJV
[13] He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His
name is called The Word of God.

Pride blinds the dumb smart people.
Jesus could do miracles before them and raise the dead and they
would accuse him of being a conjuror.
You must have some degree of God consciousness to see and perceive
the Creation and the design of God within it.

You can never work it out by intellect alone.
Darwinism is their religion of faith.

Well the theory of everything might be dead, but the theory of zombies (or rather, their threads) is alive and well.

But since it was already dug up... About this theory of everything, I'm still waiting for it to explain gravity. I never have understood why stuff keeps getting sucked into gravity wells. Mind you, I'm not COMPLAINING about it... I'd hate to have to tether myself to the planet to keep from flying away. I'd just like to understand why it happens.
