Blain,
Jesus didn't go around just "agreeing" with whatever people said in order to be "nice".
Jesus STOOD UP AGAINST anything he saw as false.
Many people CHOOSE to have a very myopic, and one-sided view of Jesus.
But Jesus wasn't one-dimensional.
He had different sides.
He had sides that people often try to ignore.
Jesus could be GENTLE AT THE RIGHT TIME, or he could be HARSH AT THE RIGHT TIME.
Jesus called the Pharisees vipers, chased people out of the temple with a whip, and always called things what they were.
Jesus never HELD BACK ON SPEAKING THE TRUTH in order to NOT UPSET PEOPLE.
Jesus always spoke the truth.
Sometimes it was gentle, and sometimes it was harsh and OFFENSIVE.
And if you want to start quoting Paul, you need to also quote HIM in a BALANCED and REALISTIC WAY.
Paul actually told us to point out people with bad doctrine, and MARK them.
Romans 16:17
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Paul doesn't say to "mark" people who say things "that offend you". Being upset, or offended, wasn't the criteria.
Paul said to mark people who use "bad doctrine".
It's irrelevant if "good doctrine" upsets you or not.
We are to teach "good doctrine" and mark those teaching "bad doctrine".
Maybe the "bad doctrine" is very sweet and lovely, and the "good doctrine" is very harsh and offensive... it's irrelevant. We don't hold to doctrine based on whether or not it makes everyone happy. We base doctrine on TRUTH... not on how it makes people feel.
If you want to be GENUINELY LOVING to others...
you need to tell them THE TRUTH...
REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT IT OFFENDS THEM.
JESUS OFTEN OFFENDED PEOPLE BY SPEAKING THE TRUTH.
We need to read ALL of the Bible... not just the parts that we like.
