Abortion is a Gift From God' Says Taxpayer-Funded Art Display at University

The University of Michigan paid $1,000 to pro-choice artist Heather Ault, who delivered a presentation and presented her "4,000 Years of Choice" collection. One piece in the collection declares "abortion is a gift from God."

Ault was paid to deliver a lecture on Jan. 16. Along with the lecture, Ault's art is being displayed on the UM campus until May. Students for Life of America is asking its supporters to contact the university to request that the display be removed.


The display is not about the political issues of abortion, a spokesperson for the university told SFLA, but about the history of women learning to abort their fetuses in order to gain control over when they are pregnant.

"Contrary to what they are saying, this display is not about pro-choice or even pro-abortion. This is about the history of women learning to control their reproductive system. Heather [Ault] is trying to get past the hanger and the idea of back ally dirty abortions and celebrate the ways women, and men for that matter, can control their reproductive system through birth control and even by aborting a fetus," Debra Schwartz, senior public relations representative for UM's Institute for Research on Women and Gender, said.

According to the 4000 Years For Choice website, Ault "is an award-winning artist, researcher, and activist for abortion rights and reproductive justice" and is "devoted to re-visioning the historical and cultural narrative of abortion and contraception."

Also on the website, Ault explains that the display is meant to convey the history of abortion as one of "reproductive empowerment, wisdom, and self-care" and "women's deeply ingrained desire to control pregnancies for the good of ourselves, our relationships, and our families."

Other posters in the art series read: "Abortion Providers Are Heros!," "Everyday Should Be Abortion Providor Appreciation Day!," "I Am Proud To Say It Out Loud. ABORTION! ABORTION! ABORTION! ABORTION!" and "Calm And Peace Radiate From This Space. Celebrate Abortion Clinics!"

Another series by Ault, called "Reproductive Roots" is a set of graphics designed to be shared on social media. These graphics, Ault writes on her website, are a critique of the combative language of the pro-choice movement. As an alternative, Ault wants to "focus on the inherent goodness in every woman's reproductive journey."

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, was on the UM campus Monday to see the exhibit. In a conversation with The Christian Post she confirmed that the art is prominently displayed in a UM building.

SLA says that Ault is not simply providing a history of abortion but is a pro-abortion activist. The pro-life group is calling on UM to remove the display, return the taxpayer funds that were used, and only use private money for such displays.

"Abortion is never safe for woman, legal or illegal, and for the University of Michigan to have the audacity to use taxpayer dollars and a taxpayer-funded building to push forth an agenda and human rights violation that the majority of Americans oppose is disgusting," Hawkins said in a Friday press release.

Wow this is quite frankly sickening how they are trying to promote and make abortion seem so rosy and something to be desired.

Now I being a male have never had an abortion obviously, nor have I ever had sex thus never got anyone pregnant and thus never required such a thing. Personally, I have always been somewhat against abortion, or at the least, against basically making a false image out of it being something that is good even when I was an atheist and didn't care about the religious dimension of the argument. Though I admit abrotion is honestly kinda a non-issue for me personally and to be blunt, it irks me with how much politicians of both spectrums spend so much time on this when we got bigger problems in America and the world and they should be governing instead of regulating social issues.

Now I will say it is law of the land that abortion is legal, so I cannot condemn someone whom has an abortion as being a criminal. I also believe women do deserve some choices in regards to maternity as well due to the massive problem of men walking out on women and the single parent and divorce epidemics that began in the 1960s and have only gotten worse into today. I also feel like such condemnation of the People rather than the Act itself is a big problem with the Abortion Debates. Sadly for my generation abortion is very very common. I know acquaintances and people around my town that have had multiple abortions, some as young as 13 years old!

In fact one of my best friends got his girlfriend pregnant years ago and she had an abortion. Not condemning him or her, but honestly that one event for my friend really opened my eyes to how bad abortion is (I knew it was wrong before, but its really eye-opening beyond words to share in someones plight that you know very well that has had to undergo such distress.) Both him and his girlfriend are very very liberal people (in sense of American liberalism). So because of that when the girl went to go have the abortion there was not much stigma about taking that choice. Plus my friend was not aware initially his girlfriend had made such a choice (in America the woman can opt to have an abortion without consent of the father, I believe this part of the law ought to be changed with both biological parents, or in the event they are minors, both their parents, having some say in the abortion process.) However, AFTER the abortion both people were severely emotionally traumatized and I know this event is something that still weighs on my friend's conscience to this day. Both are still quite liberal politically, but both are now very much against abortion.

For the older folks and people my age from traditionalist families they are very staunch against abortion. You are correct to be staunch against this foul practice indeed. However my only rebuke to you is please keep in mind the human toll besides just the baby. What you have to understand is for my generation of whom abortion has been pretty much ingrained into the culture before we were even born (or chosen not to be aborted depending how you look at it.) Many of my brethren don't know it is wrong and the culture, politics, and education system does a swell job in maintaining this ignorance. I know that sounds hypocritical (cause obviously murder is murder to anyone that adheres to common sense), but consider how we're taught pro-abortion policies in our public schools and many of the older generation (our parents generation) are in fact majority pro-choice since that is the generation that really sparked this debate to begin with and thus at home or in the community abortion is seen as acceptable. This is why for my generation a lot of stuff besides just abortion that is obviously bad is taught to us as acceptable and why the Millenials seem so out of whack.

I would say for any anti-abortion Crusaders keep fighting your good fight, but please remember the human toll to the two parents still living. I think that is the best approach to educating people my age and younger to decide against the abominable practice of abortion. It's really the only way we're going to stiffle the growing epidemic of abortion in the 21st Century. Simply saying "its bad and you're going to hell" is not going to stop abortion, I wish that's all it did take, but in all honesty, you are not winning over any allies, in fact you are losing the fight. A good way to go about ending this foul practice is examine people whom have had to have abortions and bring awareness to their plight and emotional hurt and also demonstrate good Christian ethics and forgive them and help them forgive themselves and move foward. People might go into abortion thinking it is acceptable at first due to much cultural brainwashing, but AFTER the operation, they always feel that sense of regret. I ain't condemning anyone to hell if they have had an abortion, but on that same token I cannot condone the practice of abortion itself. I think anyone who has had an abortion can be forgiven, but I also think for that process of forgiveness to work you gotta admit that abortion was wrong, you made a mistake, and you should help educate people on why it is a mistake. Not only that but a lot of people have abortions because they think there is no other choices for them (ironically pro-choice is misleading title as most people that have abortions feel forced into such despair because they feel they have no other choice.) So I think in the anti-abortion crusade not only should the human emotional toll be examined, but justifiable alternatives (Choices!) like abstinence, non-harmful birth control, and of course adoption should also be given a little more attention.

Just my thoughts on the issue of Abortion in the 21st Century. Sorry for the rant. Like I said to be honest abortion is not one of my big issues that I worry about too much, but this article disgusted me with its misleading portrayl of abortion as something to be celebrated so much that I felt compelled to write my opinion on abortion. Meh I would argue that it depends how you define liberalism and conservative.

The general definition for liberal according to dictionary.com:

1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
2. ( often initial capital letter ) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.

3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism, especially the freedom of the individual and governmental guarantees of individual rights and liberties.

4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

5. favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.


And also definition for Conservative according to dictionary.com:

1. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.
2. cautiously moderate or purposefully low: a conservative estimate.

3. traditional in style or manner; avoiding novelty or showiness: conservative suit.

4. ( often initial capital letter ) of or pertaining to the Conservative party.

5. ( initial capital letter ) of, pertaining to, or characteristic of Conservative Jews or Conservative Judaism.


So I think by this standard one could make a fair argument for being Liberal or Conservative given each individual's unique circumstances and their unique nations/states. One also should remember what is Conservative in one nation or region is quite Liberal in another and vice versa. And we can illustrate how either one is either good or bad.

For example of good and bad liberalism and conservative:

I was born in 1989, the law of the land before I was born is to allow abortion and not just that but also in place before my birth is the policy of government sponsored promotion of abortion. Therefore if I supported abortion abortion then I'd be a Conservative since these are the traditional values my forefathers laid out for the land and if I want to bring reform to abortion policy in America, for instance my idea that the biological father should have some sort of input in the abortion process (granting the sex was mutual and not a case of rape) or outright abolishing abortion then my stance would be a Liberal stance according the American Politics and Culture.

In another example: In my state of Ohio the state constitutional definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. I personally support this definition of Legal Marriage therefore I am a Conservative in Ohio in that regard. If I were to condone changing the definition to allow gay marriage I'd then be a Liberal in that regard. However if I were for instance born into one of the states that supports gay marriage and I supported gay marriage then I'd be a Conservative in that state's culture. Likewise if I was born into that same state and I held my stance on Traditional Marriage I'd then be a Liberal according to that states' culture.

Then we can get into the more layman's usage of the terms Conservative and Liberal which pretty much is an interchangeable term for American Political Party affiliation (liberal meaning the Democrat Party and conservative meaning the Republican Party.) If that be the case I would argue both Parties are crap and I have a strong belief both Parties have decayed to the point of being unfit to govern my nation due to severe misrule of the nation in the past 14 years and I believe both Parties should be promptly dissolved in the next election cycle with their elite members that have clung to power for far too long being forced into retirement from their positions of governance.

Either way though, myself being a big ideological opponent of the current political elite of Both American Political Parties I do agree for one, that we can't just throw out our leaders in bloody revolution and must wait for the end of their lawful term of governance before we liquidate them with the lawful power of the vote. And I also most certainly agree 100% with your point that I hope All Americans, not just Christians, would be a little more scrutinous before they support any sort of politician, political party, or political movement.
