I have a friend that is nineteen and she is from a catholic/Mexican family. We have recently been having a discussion about free will and how that comes into obeying your parents as an adult when you live with them. I was having a problem with the fact that she can't really do anything without her parents permission. In fact, she came over to my house the other day and her mom found out and that led to me finding out that her mom doesn't allow for her to go into other people's houses. She said she was going to try to change her mother's mind, but I suggested that she talk to her father about it as well because he is the man of the house and has the spiritual covering. I took that from what my pastor had recently told me when I talked to him about my friend. He said that she shouldn't leave the spiritual covering of her father too soon. Now I never new what it meant for a father to have a spiritual covering so I decided to look it up and I am not making any headway. All I am getting is stuff about churches and a biased man's opinion due to the fact that he didn't respect his father.

It sounds a little like the shepherding movement.

Mark 10:42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
Mark 10:43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

It is really the mark of the Pagan to exercise Lordship over someone.

I don't know what the motive could be other than an overprotective father or at worst: spiritual abuse.

I found this link that might explain what it is. I would still need more information to make a final judgment.

I have never heard of "spiritual covering" so I googled it in a number of translations and got nothing! If you start researching something, and really dig into the Bible and it isn't there, it probably isn't real. Your pastor is wrong and out of line. It makes me wonder what else your pastor is telling you that is made up?

I do do think you need to find out a few things about your friend. Is she unhappy with her parents controlling her totally, even though she is legally an adult in most places? Is this kind of control typical of Mexican culture, or is this just sonething the parents are doing that has nothing to do with culture? Does she want help getting free if her parents, if she is unhappy, and is she willing to pay the price, such as estrangement from her family? You can be a real help her, but don't push her to do things unless she is motivated to try and change things.

As for you, I would listen carefully to the things your current pastor says. If you find a lot of unbiblical things, being portrayed as from God or Christian, I would honestly leave that church. It sounds like your pastor is being deceived by made up things pretending to be biblical.

I am starting to think that it is more about the spiritual covering of the commandment that says to honor your mother and father and since the father is meant to be the head of the house that must have been where the mix up came from. I am starting to believe this because I had to leave my dad's house to go live with my mother due to my need for a mother at the time and if he had said no, I still probably would've gone and it would have been the right thing to do. I was lead to the Lord by my mother and I learned how to be a woman, whereas, I was lead to self-destruction and hatred by my dad and probably would have ended up committing suicide before my 15th birthday had I not moved in with my mom. Where was my dad's spiritual covering in that? I am not saying this in anger, but in understanding. I'm not seeing it as the person who has the spiritual covering (accept for a spiritual leader over a congregation, which is in the Bible) but in following GOD'S Commandments.
