What do you think the age diffidence should be between your girlfriend/boyfriend?

I think it totally depends on the people, I know my parents are 5 years apart and my older sister married someone 10 years older than her. Me personally I think depending on the situation I would cap it at 10 years.

I would say no more than 10 years. after that its just a little too weird :D :P lol
but yea it depends

my best friend who is 19 is going out with a a guy that is 36 and they are both happy personally i wouldnt go out with a guy that is 17 years older than me but its personal choice

Personally, I wouldn't date a guy over 3 years older than me. I dated a younger guy once, and that didn't go so well.

Math guy here. The acceptable age difference between two persons, is governed by the following formula.

Minimum age for younger partner = Age of older partner / 2 + 7.

I didn't come up with this myself. It's floated around math departments for a while. Works well for ages above 14. Here's a sampling of the youngest acceptable partner at a variety of ages.

Current age -> Youngest person you can date
14 -> 14
16 -> 15
18 -> 16
21 -> 17/18, depending on how you round.
40 -> 27
64 -> 39

Some people might be thinking the 40/27 and 64/39 figures are off, but think about the older wealthy guys who have attractive younger wives. Their relationships are socially accepted (though maybe somewhat frowned upon), so the formula still holds true.

An interesting side note is that this formula predicts your dating pool should actually increase as you approach mid-life, as your acceptable dating range increases. See below for a graph of census data plotting age against the number of people that you can acceptably date, using the age/2 +7 rule.

Wow, those mathmeticians must be pretty bored. I wonder how old their wives are.

most of the guys i have dated where younger than me but just by a couple of months and they actually did go quite well tbh

My belief on this is that it is more about compatability than it is about age.

A man needs to be mature enough to be able to be the spiritual leader in the relationship. AND, the woman needs to be spiritually mature enough to be able to be submissive and allow him to lead in the relationship.

That has nothing to do with control, or power for the guy or weakness or being pathetic for the girl....it is acctually just the opposite.

It boils down to respect and reverance for the Lord to have respect for one another...listening to one another.

Besides spiritual maturaty etc, common interests, etc play into it as well. You can't really put an age on that.

There are numerous people that I know that have age gaps and have really wonderful marriages. Often you do not know there is age gap unless they tell you.

I too agree with Grace.... :)
It doesnt necessarily come down to age does it?
Outlooks on life, maturity, commonality and life direction AND above ALL....the Lordship of Jesus Christ!

Not that I would know really......... Im still single....with no prospect of any guy at the moment! LOL

How did I know I wasn't going to get past seeing a good ol' Topher quote here on CC. Honestly when it comes down to it we shouldn't even worry about age or anything else. If God wants to put us in a relationship and we are truly seeking after him then he will provide with ages set aside. :D

Topher- Thanks for the maths! That made my day. Just great.

On this issue, I'm with the folks who say it's all about compatibility.

I would not go with someone who was more than 10 years older than me. I believe it depends on the people in the relationship and their feelings about the relationship.

We do grow out of the childishness. Some of us anyway. As you get older the whole age thing begins to mean less and less. There was a time I wouldn't have considered anyone more than a year or two outside my own age, but now I don't care if we have ten years difference. As long as we get along and our interests and beliefs are the same. Not to mention being at a similar maturity level.

For me, mental age is more important than chronological age. Our bodies can become old, but our souls are eternal, they never become old. There are three Egos - child ego, parental ego and adult ego in every individual, young or old. In some, adult ego is more operative than the other two egos. I've often seen small kids whose adult ego is very operative that they think and act like grown ups. That's why I think our mental age matters more than our chronological age.

I used to think that I would never date a guy that was younger than me and that I should date guys older because they might be more mature or something. I was wrong , I met this guy a year ago that was four years younger than me. We has a lot in common with each other. I learned to not judge people by their age after that experience.
