Matthew 4:3-4

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

I think what Jesus might have been doing by proclaiming those "It is written"s is to reaffirm his faith. He was recalling scripture from the word of God to combat the attacks of the devil. Satan, on the other hand, was twisting the Word of God in attempt to undermine Jesus' doctrine and faith. Jesus' doctrine and ability to discern was superior to the devil's lies and refuted every argument with scripture.

lookuptoseeJesus is right. Discerning the messages of God takes a broader understanding. Ask the Lord for guidance. I heard on the radio once that Pastor Chuck used to teach Old Testament lessons and connect them to New Testament examples. And he'd do vice versa. The truths taught in one book or chapter often resound throughout the word of God. For example, in Job, Job mentions not even daring to look at his neighbor's wife. Jesus compliments this by explaining to look with lust is adultery in the heart.

With all that said, I can still sympathize with SaintBobby. Many Christians are content with answers that aren't grounded in the Word of God at all. We do need to get our answers straight from the Word, but I don't think it's as simple as using verses as swords. I think that's what we do against the devil when we're already assured of its meaning.
