In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. – 1 Timothy 6:19
Business men are always looking for good investments and ways to invest towards the future. But as history records worldly investments many times fall through, stock markets crash, natural disasters happen. Life itself also can end at anytime, such seeking for wealth on this earth is like sinking sand. Paul the Apostle here is sharing Timothy to encourage rich believers to ensure they are living in a way with their possessions that they are investing them into eternity. He speaks of a “firm foundation” which is the sure place to invest. Mankind invests great amounts of energy seeking to become wealthy and get ahead in life simply to enjoy those things to themselves. For many to become wealthy requires that you oppress others around you. A strong warning comes from the Lord to such that invest only in this earth existence for themselves: “You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter” (James 5:5). Giving to the poor and needy was the way that Jesus taught by example. Maintaining a heart for the poor of this world is a way to keep from the love of money and seeking gain for yourself. If you see the “coming age” as more important then this brief life on earth you will seek to invest your life and resources as our Lord did.
