Salvation is only through Jesus. It is He who shed His blood to purchase your salvation.
John 14:6

It is automatic when you are born again. Just believe it by faith. You don't need to feel any electric sparkly stuff. You don't have to speak in tongues either.
No. Please don't. It was a great hinderance to them. Just understand that we are born in sin and need a Savior.
Just go straight to Jesus and have a little talk with Him. He longs for a personal relationship with you today.

The requirement for salvation, being born again, and becoming a Christian according to scripture is
1. Belief and faith
2. Confession of belief
3. Repentance
4. Water immersion, baptism, for the forgiveness of your sins
Doing the above saves you, gives you the gift of the Holy Ghost, and adds you to the Lord's body which is his church
I posted to Fundaamental's other thread that maybe it will help him get an idea what being saved means if we talk about our own testimonies of how we got saved ourselves.

Do you believe? Are you baptized. Simple enough. None of this is about us or what we think or what we do. Its about a promise from God through Christ, Jesus to all. No one does as they ought, and our life in Christ is a process. Get in a good church. I always recommend an LCMS church. (You can google that). Now learn to rest in the Lord.

In our lives, every word and every action is fruit from our hearts. Sinners sin because that’s what is in their hearts. Thieves steal, rapists attack, and adulterers cheat because those sins are the fruit being produced from an evil heart. Bad hearts produce bad fruit. When Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruit” concerning false teachers, He was giving us a guide for identifying them. False prophets, speakers of lies, will have actions that correspond to their errant message. Just as their message is anti-God, so will be their works. They will stray from the path of righteousness.
He's new to Christianity. So no you can't, anymore than when a mother conceives a child anyone can know.
Later on, we can evaluate fruit, and even then not fully know. Paul, I doubt, knew Demas would depart. The disciples didn't know that it was Judas who would betray Jesus, and in 1 John the Apostle says they went out from us because they were not of us. Up to that time, they appeared to be authentic.
Until we are able to discern the heart, we will never be sure.
Being new to Christianity has nothing to do with fruit or anything else other than maybe you've now become convinced and believe. The Ethiopian eunuch as recorded in Acts 8, was new to Christianity when Philip introduced Jesus to him by clarifying the scriptures he was reading. He believed and was immediately baptized and upon doing so, he became a Christian.
You don't need to become like a Jew first but you have to experience being real born again. It's not like once you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior in your mind and heart, that's it, but it's an experience. Being born again, you must die first. Do you know that without forsaking everything and carrying our cross daily and denying ourselves daily, we cannot be Jesus' disciples? Have you lost your life on earth? That's a question you must ask in order for you to know.
Being born again is a very painful process of denying the lust of the flesh so that the life of Christ would manifest in our lives.
Read and obey his word. You cannot do anything without abiding in Jesus. His word sanctifies and cleanses us as we obey it. That's what Jesus meant when he said to Nicodemus, "Marvel not that I tell you that you must be born again. Except a man be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter God's kingdom."
The water is the Word, and the words that Jesus speaks to us is spirit and life.

The baptism that saves is spiritual and baptizes us into Christ. This is why there is no condemnation to those who are IN Christ Jesus. Water baptism is an outward ordinance signifying an inward reality.
Read and meditate on this whole Chapter. You DO NOT have to wonder if you are saved. Here is a verse stating such from this chapter:

For clarification, being born again isn't a painful process that doesn't involve length of time or anything other than belief initially, and obedience as you've alluded to. What is obedience when in terms of obeying the gospel? It's simple. Jesus said "he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved" as recorded in Mark 16. Obedience after belief means being baptized and upon doing so, you are saved and become a member of the body of Christ and thus a Christian. It's at that point as well that you are buried with Christ in baptism and baptized into his death, simulating his death and likewise his resurrection. Read Romans 6. Also read the account of the Ethiopian eunuch and his conversion in Acts 8. It wasn't painful nor involved any extensive amount of time. Philip preached Christ to him, obviously told him about the the need to be baptized due to the question asked by the eunuch, and he was immediately baptized. Very simple process.
1. Belief and faith
2. Confession of belief as the eunuch did and as required per Romans 10:9
3. Repentance as was told to the Jews on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:38
4. Baptism for the remission of sins, to receive the Holy Ghost, and be added to the church per Acts 2:38-47

So what does that mean ?????????????------if your a born again Christian you have the Holy spirit indwelling In you and through the Holy Spirit you will produce Good fruit -------as a matter of fact you should have a character change right away ------there should be some change in the way you think and act ----after receiving Jesus in your heart -------
That's nonsense and not what the scriptures say. Water immersion in the name of Jesus Christ is for the remission of sin, for receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and being added to the Lord's body which is his church per Acts 2:38-47. It's nor an outward sign of anything. The Ethiopian eunuch's conversion wad in the middle of nowhere and in the presence of no one except Philip. It wasn't for visuals, but predicated upon belief and obedience as commanded.
Mark 16:15-16
15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Belief + baptism = salvation
I don't deny that is the case with the true believer. But the same can be mimicked outwardly by the natural man who later falls away as the cares of life choke off what at first seemed genuine.
Following the scriptures and being obedient to them will give you the Holy Spirit and thus life.
