Former Marine found guilty in 'American Sniper' trial

A former Marine was found guilty late Tuesday of the 2013 shooting deaths of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, the author of "American Sniper," and his friend Chad Littlefield.

It took an Erath County, Texas jury less than two hours to convict Eddie Ray Routh of capital murder. State District Judge Jason Cashon sentenced Routh to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors had not sought the death penalty in the case. Routh's defense team said they would appeal the conviction.

Testimony showed Routh shot and killed Kyle and Littlefield at a shooting range where they had taken him at the request of Routh's mother, who, during closing arguments, Routh's defense attorney apparently tried to make culpable in the murder. He suggested she "maybe should have told Chris Kyle about her son's violent behaviors." Taya Kyle cursed, slammed her hand on a chair, and stormed out of the courtroom at that remark.

Do you think the outcome of this trial would have been the same, and justice delivered as quickly, if not for the movie American Sniper being so much apart of the culture right now?
 
Yes. Chris Kyle was basically an American hero. He was really well known, even in civilian circles, before the movie even came out.

I'm surprised that it took so long for this to come to trial and be judged.

I wonder why they didn't seek the death penalty?

Good question, Grandpa. He has always been a troubled and difficult young man. Even the Marines couldn't straighten him out. Perhaps that had something to do with the choice not to seek the death penalty. Not that he was mentally disturbed, but that perhaps his committing such an act was inevitable, and the fact no one did anything for him when they could have may have created some sympathy for him in the D.A.'s office.

The VA utterly failed Routh. The VA regularly fails most vets. That system needs to be completely overhauled. It is in such disarray, run by bean-counters and non-medical executives. I won't even darken the doors of the VA until and unless I am diagnosed with some catastrophic illness that I won't burden my wife with taking on. The idiots running the VA don't consider the human cost their personal agendas bring down on the men and women who are heroes, that they are responsible for treating.

I'm glad they didn't. Simple reason being, had they sought and got the death penalty........the Media would have had a field day crucifying Texas and it's Judicial System........and the families of the two victims, the State, and the Nation would have had to endure 20 or so years of appeals which the Media would have fed on........

This way, the individual was tried, judged, and sentenced. He will be in prison for the rest of his life, and if God's willing, will never hurt anyone else.

I also hope the Penal System seeks to give him the treatment he needs. For this person is surely in need of such.

Praying for the families, and for this person as well, and his family.

I would hope and pray the same thing, p_, but even though I don't know the TDOC, I know it isn't going to happen. Correctional theory is currently geared to warehousing and nothing more. Rehabilitation disappeared from the system 25 years ago.

I think American Sniper reflects the culture of those who take the threat of our enemies seriously.
