I grew up Independent Baptist which instilled a love of the Word and seeking His truth. While I was convinced of saving grace, I learned little of living in grace.

My [ex]husband became a licensed minister in a Southern Baptist church where I learned to relax some of the artificial standards I had set for myself and everyone else but became too willing to compromise.

We were briefly Assemblies of God, where I learned to worship but missed deep scriptural teaching.

Now I am at a Bible church with the most brilliant and engaging preaching I have ever heard and the freedom to worship as the Spirit leads.

[Please note that this was my experience in individual churches in these denominations and a reflection of my own spiritual journey. What a blessing that God can reach us in different ways and at different times in our lives!]

Thanks. I lean more towards an ecumenical (finding unity in all the Christian churches) belief. As all denominations are meant to be one- the body of Christ. Catholicism has an important place in my heart and in developing my spirituality and interest in the church as a young child. I felt really drawn to God when I use to go to Mass with my grandma. I get frustrated by uneducated Protestants and alike hating on Catholicism. But that's nothing new.

For me and my choice of denomination/ churches is the feeling I get being there- if I am drawn to God or feel that I am in a holy place. 'Holy' meaning the building is set apart from other buildings. Atmosphere is important for me. Contemplation, silence, weekly communion, and prayer. Some people can worship in a large convention building, with a big screen, lights and Hillsong playing over the speakers. I don't feel close to God in those places.

Amen. That's something that is well-emphasized at my home church. We are all one body. We are all the Church, we just meet in different houses of worship. Every morning before the service starts, our pastor gathers anyone who is serving (teachers, ushers, praise band, etc) and we all pray together. He always prays a blessing over the entire Church of [my city name].

My city has a culture where almost all of the churches/denominations actually get along. We support one another, we visit one another's churches, youth groups from across town (and across denominations) will go on outings together, pastors and praise teams will swap churches for a week, and we have frequent city-wide prayer/worship services. This is all I have ever known, so when people from other places started telling me horror stories about how competitive some churches can be.. I couldn't believe it at first.

His laughter is definitely infectious. The way he's describing it, you can see it in your head. I can't imagine how his boss felt when he got that message. It's a good thing they recorded it, since most voicemails delete old messages automatically and it would have been lost forever.

I could actually see the whole scene unfolding in my mind! I suppose it was wrong to laugh but I just couldn't help it. I will probably think of this from time to time for the rest of my life and get a chuckle out of it.

I think there are many things we shouldn't find funny that we laugh at. When I read the post above about beating someone unconscious with their Bible, this call came to my mind, and so I shared it, because it is funny. And that is just the plain (and to some, sad) truth.

Guys, thanks so much for sharing! I actually thought no one would answer here lol.

Like I said, I myself am an Independent Baptist; I guess you would call us traditional in our worship because we sing the old congregational hymns and still have pews, we preach exclusively from the King James Bible and we're considered "conservative" in our beliefs of separation and doctrine (but we just call it living by what the Bible says ); we have missions conferences, campmeetings, revivals, and we like to eat(!) lol.

We're a small church, though. What sets us apart is that our church is bilingual, meaning that we have an interpreter alongside the pastor as he's preaching, and we sing both Spanish and English songs in the service.

We've had our tough moments, but there's a faithful few there, and that little flock has the power to keep it going.

We like phrases like "sticking with the stuff" and "the old paths"; we pass out tracts and have Sunday School classes, plus a bus ministry. We have an "oldfashioned altar" that we pray in, and that's where people go to get right with God (not exclusively, though ).

I know that many of the churches you're all acquainted with have these things, but I didn't grow up in church, and all of these things were so alien to me.

I don't have a denomination. Long story. To keep it short, I was raised by the Vatican church, and I even have several ancestors who were priests for the Vatican church. One Sunday morning, in Switzerland, as a young adult, I attended a protestant service for the first time in my life, and immediately, I saw a radical difference from the Vatican.
People were ALIVE ! It was not boring to death, there was a lively music with a choir singing and children dancing spontaneously, and that very day, I decided to leave the Vatican forever !

After that, I visited other protestant and evangelical churches to find the right one for me.
In the end, I decided to choose the SDA Church because I wanted to completely cut all ties with the Vatican, and the SDA Church was the only one I knew which didn't observe the Sabbath at the first day as the Vatican commanded for centuries.

Some time later, I would read the writings of E.White, and would discover such horrendous heresies in her writings that I began to tell some SDA members that E.White was certainly NOT a prophetess !
And that she was certainly a false prophetess and a freemason witch !
Also, I was categorized as " fundamentalist " by the pastor,
as I couldn't stand hearing horrendous heresies and teachings in Scriptures studies Sabbath morning and
I would openly condemn them ! One word that I often heard in biblical studies in SDA Church and several other Churches and I hate to death ? The word " symbolic " !
Oh Lord, I hate so much that word " symbolic " !
It seems like a fancy way to censure what the Scriptures truly say and to get rid of the Lord's Word altogether !

Well, people started to ignore me, and now I don't have any news from them,
and now Heaven is my only Church, Hope, and Refuge.

I'm a truth seeker, so I hate so much any kind of lies and manipulation,
that I'm willing to be ostracized by the majority for the sake of truth !

I've searched almost all churches on the internet, and all I found so far is that in one way or another, there's always some Vatican's influence in the background of doctrines and practices, and I don't want to have anything to do with the Vatican anymore, forever !
