Hello. I've never chatted online before. What do you do to encourage your kids to do their homework?

At home here I have a routine. it is essential as I have 4 school age children. They come in from school, I have dinner waiting for them. They eat and then they have to do their homework before they are allowed to play, talk on phone, etc. I have been using this since my 14 year old daughter started school, and it works. It's non-negotiable, and in thier mids, it is expected. that the way it is, type of thing. Hope this helps = )

Thanks for the idea. I'll try that next week on my seven year old son. He's a very smart kid, and breezes through his homework once he gets going, but getting him started is almost as bad as nailing jello to the wall. He reminds me of myself at that age.

Homeschooling offers different understanding of "homework" I encourage my kids to learn. Not homework but pursue and learn the things they are going to use.

I hear you loud and clear when you mention encouraging kids to learn. I do that with both my son and daughter with their homework as well as aside from it. I'm hoping that my kids learn to apply discipline to whatever task is required of them.

I have been a single mother since my daughter was 4. It was very hard on me since I was a brilliant student and my daughter never seemed to be. I was the kind of mother that ripped out the pages of notebooks or torn homework because it wasn't perfectly done....until... someone told me I needed to understand my daughter was a CHILD and not a SMALL ADULT. I asked for help and I found that hiring a tutor was the best for both of us. It would never have happened if I if I had not accepted that I wasn't the best teacher for her and that hiring someone was best, even though I wanted to be the best parent and teacher ...So since that age until she graduated highschool it was the perfect solution for keeping a good relationship with her. Now she is almost finishing college and we still have a great relation.

My kids do their best when there's a routine to follow. Am I consistent enough to maintain the routine...eh, not as much as I'd like. But ideally, yeah. I think it helps them know what to expect, and then they know the consequences for not following through.
