Forgiveness is unilateral - that is, we practice forgiveness as Christians whether the other person asks for forgiveness or not, or whether they deserve it or not. This is what Christ did for us, and what we are then able to extend to others, because we have been the recipients of forgiveness we did nothing to deserve!

I think people need to understand what forgiveness is. If someone comes to my door and kicks me in the shin everyday, he needn't expect me to forgive him. On the other hand, if he stops kicking me in the shin, why wouldn't I forgive him?

You feel like trust and forgiveness are synonymous? What about forgiving one's enemies, in that case? Thanks for taking a moment to elaborate, by the way.

Well, let's take a look at the refugee example. Should we trust all of them that's supposed to come over? I think we can agree the Bible says to forgive your enemies, including the ones that are extreme ones.

With all due respect.. I think that you don't understand what forgiveness is. While Jesus was on the cross he said Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

What if God expected all of us sinners to stop kicking Him and only then would He forgive us?

So what is forgiveness, then? People are saying forgivness is forgiving basically.. That's like saying shopping is to go shopping. You can't really define something by just repeating the word.

I can forgive someone who wronged me - for instance, my neighbor, who chooses to drive his car over my freshly planted garden. Day 2, when I see my neighbor driving over my garden, I signal out to him and say, in a friendly way "Hey! How are you? Ummm... you probably didn't realize it, but I have planted a garden here (pointing to the garden he's already run over once). I'm planting food I can can later this season and have for the cold winter (I say with a smile). Have a great day!" My neighbor drives off. But then day 3, he decides to drive over my garden again, knowing what I've said to him. Now it takes a little more work to forgive. I have to tell the Lord how angry I am, as I know he has done this purposefully! I vent out that anger until it's 'out'. Then I say "Lord, I choose to forgive him for not only running over my garden, but also for how mean it was for him to do that, knowing this is food for our household's survival for the winter!" Then I start blessing my neighbor, as an act of my will, until the 'bitter taste' in my mouth is gone. After that, I build a fence around my garden!

:)

You mentioned how forgiveness isn't about "I totally trust you, frenemy!" If you don't trust someone, then why is the person in your life, and did you really forgive if you don't trust? I'm asking in general.

Somewhere along the line you have merged the two to mean the same thing. And if you've been mistreated because of it, then doesn't that tell you that the merging is a faulty notion?

Then you operate in distrust, and adopt the faulty notion of not forgiving because you think that forgiving must be wrong.

Sister Abidein posted an example that I was trying to look for.. I just hear Christians all the time say forgiveness is to forgive... Well, creating a budget means to budget... That doesn't really tell you What it means to budget, though, does it? This is just somethi g that I have often thought about because, yes, forgiveness and trust do come hand in hand. To they mean the same? Of course not. An abusee forgives the abuser, but doesn't go back and trust him again.

Forgiveness does not require feelings, it requires obedience. Trusting someone must require that the person you trust is trustworthy. Trust involves an emotion, forgiving does not. Yet you have put feelings with forgiveness.. when you don't forgive it is because you fear being hurt again.

The way to forgive is to say, "Father, I forgive that person." You can say it with all the emotional rush that may come, but it's still an act of your will.

Forgive me, I've reread what I posted and it's sounds pretty bossy. I do apologize, sometimes I am thinking about what I want to say and less about how it comes across.

Forgiveness is a deliberate act of obedience and depending on how serious you've been wronged, it can take a long time to get to that point. But the first step is to choose to forgive. Then you can work from there. But choosing to forgive is crucial. You may not want to at that point, but God will change your heart to the point where you'll grow to forgive.

That's really difficult.. when I'm disappointed I can't control my emotional and feeling..

When u feel rejected, when everyone give u mock, and idk how to control my feeling.. I feel disappointed..

This really isn't making any sense to me. Lol, I'm sorry. I'm sure you have a fair point that you're driving at, it's just that these examples and the logic here is befoozling to me.

Forgiveness is a deliberate act of obedience(...).
I have a really hard time accepting that. Good post though, Tin man.

What If a person slapped you on the face and then they felt bad about It and apologized to you.You should forgive them.

Then the next time you see them, they slap you again, but again they regret doing It and apologize.IMO you should forgive them but at some point you are not going to allow your self to be hurt by that person because you don't trust them.

Forgiveness Is always the right thing to do In truth, but not trusting that person around you doesn't mean you haven't forgave them.

I've tied and seemed to link the two together. Part of me feels have you really fully forgiven if there is no trust? Does that make sense?

It Was early in the morning and I honestly really couldn't think of an example besides that.. That was a bad one, I know. I've been putting forgiveness and trust together. Like if someone close to you stole a lot of money from you. How do you forgive him or her but at the same time not trust that person again?

Fair enough, brother. I know I find it difficult to forgive. Some people more than others, that's for sure.

Forgiveness is not so difficult for me. Thanks Siela. ;)

jsr, no worries. My only two cents is that trusting - or choosing not to - occurs separate from forgiveness. I feel that forgiveness is an affair of the heart, intended to release us and our offenders from our embitterment and/or animosity, whereas trust occurs in the mind, and is a matter of discernment.

Luke 23:34King James Version (KJV)

34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
