Are we parents worthy of being a model of teaching and conduct?

  • “My son, keep your father's commandments, and do not forsake the law of your mother;” (Proverbs 6.20).

Observe that, in regard to the commandment of the father, the advice is in the affirmative (“keep”), while the one of the mother is in the negative (“*don’t* forsake”).

Perhaps you ask: “but, what is the difference?”. An affirmative commandment is active, it implies in exertion. An negative one is passive and infers rest. In order to clarify more, the fact of someone don’t forget the law of the mother doesn’t mean that this person will keep in mind her laws. This one can, for instance, write her laws in a place wherein these laws stand out (for instance, as it was ordained in the Old Testament, write them upon the posts and gates of the house – Deuteronomy 6.9), but not necessarily carry them out.

When, nonetheless, someone keeps the commandments of the father, he put them into practice all the time. There is other distinction: in relation to the father is “commandments”; to the mother, “law”.

It comes the question: why is it done these distinctions? My explanation is that the wife ought to confirm what the husband avers. The husband brings in Jesus’ will to everyone at home accomplish it and the wife will instruct the children so that they can better work out the importance of the commandments of the husband. This, they will have, in their mind and heart, all the explanation regarding to all circumstances that they won in Christ abiding by the commandments that Jesus imparted to her husband.

So, have a good day hearing Jesus’ voice and living by the following commandment:

  • “Therefore you shall lay up these my words in your hearts and in your souls, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, so that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them to your sons, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them upon the door posts of your house, and upon your gates,” (Deuteronomy 11.18-20).
