One problem that hits the church today is the plague of “Selective Hearing”. In other words, we hear only that part of a message that agrees with our own point of view and we discard anything that doesn’t agree with us.

We are fascinated to hear what the next door neighbour is doing on facebook, or interested in other things that really has no real worth to us. Churches struggle to open our ears to listen to valuable messages that God is speaking to us. yet we rather want to hear about a husband and wife arguing on facebook, or on TV on these chat shows. The World is making a loud noise of nonsence, for us to hear what God is trying to say to us.

And when we are in church, our minds wonder. We will listen to the preacher, you mind take a few notes. but then our minds are quickly distracted thinking about silly things, then you try quickly get back in the message, and then again the mind wonders.

We all need to train our mind to focus on one thing at a time. learn to block out distractions. and learn to block out other noises that get in the way. Learn to disgard facebook, TV, or other distractions.

Philippians 3:12-14

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Our prize goal is to learn to be like Jesus, and live like Jesus and learning to hear him in our hearts, lives and spirit. But how can we when things get in the way to distract us?

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Let us live in this world but not conform with it. If you do manage to hear a message, test it. we are allowed to test these things. For there are many false prophets that will mislead, that will lead you astray. the spirit in you, the very same spirit that gave you the message is not going to contradict itself now is it? but the spirit will confirm the message if you ask for it.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Facebook, social media's, chats, Computers, TV, Games, and many more are all distractions, which are corrupting talk in todays world. The enemy is behind a lot of it. the enemy will use things like that to twist, to manipulate, to deter, to lead away from the truth.

1 Timothy 4:12
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

No offence, But I cannot see purity on facebook, TV and other distractions. But many people rather listen, watch, be more interested in rubbish, rather trying to hear God's message. Then you hear then people complaining, oh why this or why that, what is happening to me, why am I in this mess, Perhaps that dont realise its there ignorance of what God has been trying to tell them all along? Perhaps, they have not listen well enough? perhaps, its the fact of the plague that hits us all, " Selective Hearing is " controlling our minds, heart and ears?

People have become disconnected from those around them and even reality at times from the reasons you say and others of course. IMO, what I believe Yah showed me, to get me to start to change, is we need to think of others as just as important and interesting us ourselves, that each person is very interesting and has special qualites, some may be more obvious than others but none the less every person is amazing and unique, I need to remember this, because I know I error in this at times. He looks at us as individuals, uniquely, why should we not? and I think this opens up a more proper understanding of what considering others needs and desires are, and would lead us to being more loving as we love ourselves, and as a byproduct, we would hear the whole Message, or the whole _______ (place anything here) and not just select the parts that we enjoy.

To hear only what we want to hear, is definitly not receiving what the Bible has to complete to exhort us and discipline. It's a bad idea to hear only good things. Nobody learns that way.

Sometimes (long time ago) when I did not want to obey God, He insisted on me to open the Bible in different texts on the same subject (apparently by chance), every time I opened to read the Bible searching for a direction, and that was touching my heart until it broke all, and God remade it from the peaces, and then I could understand He only wanted the best for me.

Yes we have become more selectively hearing as technology takes away the human aspect of conversations.

The way to get back to correct selective hearing is by being in God's Word every day. Once it becomes habit our hearing changes because of two commamds...love God love your neighbor. Once we understand these two commands our hearing becomes correct in that our own "pleasure" changes to God's pleasure. Once God is first we can then listen.

There is an even more dangerous aspect of selective hearing.

We tend to really only hear what we were raised on, and were told was the meaning of certain passages, no matter how attentive we try to be.

So, even if we DO hear some unfamiliar truths (depending upon what denomination shaped our earlier lives), we tend to discount anything that does not match what was handed down through our church's long history of believing a certain way.

Don't know about hearing...........shoot, I'm still trying to work through all the loops and bends in the Thread Title.......
