Tearing the veil that separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple symbolized that the old ways were done away with and salvation is through Christ. Tearing it from the top to the bottom was done so nobody could mistake who (God) had done it because it was such a large, tall, very heavy curtain.

It is the unlimited atonement. He tore the veil(Paid for ALL sin) so that all men could see Him. We were dead and blind to God with no chance to ever see and choose Him. He Tore the veil and PUBLICLY displayed His SON to the world. He removed the blindness of mankind.
If we reject His "in your face light" we will be judged according our deeds. Not sins, but deeds(self righteousness) are judged and that is what sends men to the LoF...........because they never believed what was clearly presented to them. The Lord Jesus Christ.

During the lifetime of Jesus, the holy temple in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish religious life. The temple was the place where animal sacrifices were carried out and worship according to the Law of Moses was followed faithfully. Hebrews 9:1-9 tells us that in the temple a veil separated the Holy of Holies—the earthly dwelling place of God’s presence—from the rest of the temple where men dwelt. This signified that man was separated from God by sin (Isaiah 59:1-2). Only the high priest was permitted to pass beyond this veil once each year (Exodus 30:10; Hebrews 9:7) to enter into God's presence for all of Israel and make atonement for their sins (Leviticus 16).
Solomon's temple was 30 cubits high (1 Kings 6:2), but Herod had increased the height to 40 cubits, according to the writings of Josephus, a first century Jewish historian. There is uncertainty as to the exact measurement of a cubit, but it is safe to assume that this veil was somewhere near 60 feet high. An early Jewish tradition says that the veil was about four inches thick, but the Bible does not confirm that measurement. The book of Exodus teaches that this thick veil was fashioned from blue, purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen.
The size and thickness of the veil makes the events occurring at the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross so much more momentous. “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:50-51a).
So, what do we make of this? What significance does this torn veil have for us today? Above all, the tearing of the veil at the moment of Jesus' death dramatically symbolized that His sacrifice, the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement for sins. It signified that now the way into the Holy of Holies was open for all people, for all time, both Jew and Gentile.

God was through with that temple and its religious system, and the temple and Jerusalem were left “desolate” (destroyed by the Romans) in A.D. 70, just as Jesus prophesied in Luke 13:35. Only the high priest could go in to the holy of holies once a year to atone for the sins of Israel,for their sins had to be atoned for every year of all that they did wrong in the past,which the veil showed a separation between God's presence and people.
Jesus is the High Priest who atoned for the sins of the world,and we now have access to the throne of grace,and God's presence is now with people,for their sins are completely washed away.

A lot of people beat me to it
- It was torn because the ultimate sacrifice was made, and we can now stand before God , even though He is holy
There is no longer a barrier between us and God (assuming we have Jesus)
- It tore from top to bottom, making it clear it was done by God's power, not man
(In either case it was so thick I doubt a man could have done it)

This vale is the one that separated the Gentiles from the priests, and by custom, the priests would stand before this veil at 3 P.M. each day. That one standing there, at 3 P.M. on this day, was the chief priest Caiaphus, the same priest that demanded Jesus death.
Caiaphus was the priests that repeated those evil wicked words from Psalm 22. As He stood there on this day at 3 P.M., the darkness was removed, the earth quaked, and the rocks trembled, as the veil that separated the holy of holies, for Gentiles was tore apart from top to bottom. This veil was a huge curtain, and with the veil split, it meant that the way to Christ and the holy of holies was open to all who chose to follow the one that paid the price for their sins.
To believe on Christ is to be released from perishing, and to come into everlasting life. It is to have your name placed in the Lamb's book of life, and not be faced with having your very soul be blotted out, and be as if you never existed.
This is the turning point of all history of all ages.
