A 7-year-old girl was shot and killed when an officer's gun went off during a struggle with a woman in a house where Detroit police were searching for a suspect in the slaying of a teenager, MyFoxDetroit.com reported.

Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee said at a news conference Sunday that Aiyana Jones was hit in the neck by a single bullet and died at a hospital.

"This is any parent's worst nightmare. It also is any police officer's worst nightmare," Godbee said.

This just tears my heart in two. I know that the police have a job to do, but how do we balance their duties with the safety of the people?

Do we know that the police shot her or, like the article says, did it happen during a struggle about which we don't have much information?
 
Oh here we go again. Another anti-American, anti-government anti-police propaganda posting. Why don't we just get rid of all the cops in our country and when some man is pounding down your door to kill you with a gun or weapon of any kind you can defend yourself?? How about the fire fighters and the EMT's too?? You've got a hose and a bandaid right? Why don't we put threads appreciating our police, fire fighters, EMTs, and military. They put themselves inline for the everyday citizen every day. They are civil servants doing their best for us, the people.

66 police officers (thats 1 almost every 2 days!) have been killed in the line of duty in this country so far in this year alone. Most of them shot by scumbag criminals. That's not to mention how many have been wounded. Lets get off our anti-cop high horse, and remember that this was an accident. A-C-C-I-D-E-N-T. It happened during a struggle and who is to say that the woman didn't reach over and pull the trigger during the struggle? This is a very sad and unfortunate incident, and I am sure that, as the article said, this officer feels TERRIBLE. But you know what, so should that girls parents!!!! Those cops were doing a high risk warrant raid on a suspected murder!!!

In November, 4 police officers were shot in cold blood at a coffee shop not 1 mile from a house I own in Lakewood,WA. They all were good people, trying to have a cup of coffee before shift to support their families. I find it so sad and HIGHLY offensive that you would find it in your need to post anti-police (which I consider anti-American) links on our Christianchat website. Miscarriages of justice in this country????..... don't get me started!

I love to respond positively to posts, but this is just down right offensive... To almost insinuate that this officer would have done this on purpose, and to bash cops in the process.

Thanks pickles! I couldn't let that one go! So many people sacrifice for the best of this country everyday so the majority of us can live safe and productive lives. God bless our cops, fire fighters, EMTs, government workers and military!! AMen!

Amen to this. I think we need to keep the family of the child in our prayers as well as the officer, he is at high risk of suicide right now. The family of the baby is suffering greatly as well.
This is one of those terrible tragidies that should not happen.
The anger should be directed at the evil that caused this.
As always our battles are against the principalities and powers of evil.
Our prayers are ith all that have been harmed.
