It is about that time: time to buy back to school supplies! I got mine this weekend (tax free holiday) and only have a few things left to buy. If you are a parent, here are some tips:
(1) If your child needs a binder, invest in a zippered one. It will last all year and has the advantage of being zippered so all his things won't spill out of his binder.
(2) Plastic folders are the way to go, they don't tear like paper ones.
(3) Glue sticks are better than bottles which leak and are messy.
(4) Ticonderoga pencils are the BEST. They are made of harder wood, so sharpen better and last longer. In general, when buying pencils, buy American made. Dixon pencils are good, and American Gold. But nothing beats Ticonderoga pencils. Yes, Chinese pencils are cheaper, but break easily and sharpen down to nothing.
(5) PLEASE send in tissue. I know it is not your responsibilty to provide for every other child, but think of it this way, if your baby doesn't need to use tissue- that means your baby is not sick!
(6) If you are not a parent of a school age child, please consider donating school supplies to your local school or district. I know you pay taxes, and in some places, every child is provided with the things they need. But this is not the case everywhere, and it is nice if the students can start off the school year feeling prepared. Most teachers will have supplies to give their students, but children who come to school lacking what they need feel embarrassed. I've seen it time and again. If they can come the first day with all their supplies, they will have a better start and feel more confident.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and for considering donating school supplies.
This has been a shameless begging post from a public school teacher.
