Romans 6: 1-23

In these verses Paul teaches that baptism is symbolic of Christ's death and resurrection. He teaches that we need to be free from sin before we are baptized: "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin" (Romans 6: 11) With this symbolism of Christ's burial and resurrection, it becomes clear that baptism should be done by emersion, rather than a sprinkling of water (or anything similar to that). After baptism Paul teaches that we should remain free from sin: "Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God." (Romans 6: 13)

After talking about baptism, Paul expounds on the last command to remain pure after baptism. Paul teaches about servitude and that we are either a servant of the Devil or a servant of God. He says, "his servants ye are to whom ye obey" (Romans 6: 16). As I read these verses, I realized that we are either slaves of sin, or servants of righteousness. Sin enslaves and requires our obedience. Righteousness enlists, and invites us to obey.
