Basket. I'd only need enough stuff to carry in my backpack for the walk. Breakfast bars, apples, oranges, green, red, orange, and yellow peppers, cheese, peanuts, cashews, fruit cups, ham slices, maybe a loaf of whole wheat bread, carrots, frozen berries, and some other stuff. The basket and the backpack may be full but I love the weight and the workout.

Nod, I'm not sure what Suckers are. In Australia 'lollies' are the general name given to sweets, candy etc.

Typically, I use a basket for grocery shopping. If I only have to buy a few items, I use my hands. Very rarely do I use a trolley. One thing I dislike about the baskets are that you have to hold them at an awkward angle (not hands side on to your body). Do you know what I mean?

I just go in empty handed find a single woman with a cart, say ''Hey can I put a few things in there since you are headed to the front'' and that my friends is how I get so many dates!

For some reason, I can actually see you doing this.

Tin, Sucker's are a type of candy on a stick. The traditional ones, lollipops, are little round disks that are fruit flavored. Although, some lollipops take on different shapes now.

These are what we call suckers in the US:

I've heard there is one born every minute :)

I know exactly what you mean! They stick out when you're carrying them on your side, so when you pass someone you have to weirdly hold it in front of you. Or do a little sashay dance to get out of their way without hitting them with the basket. :o

This isn't really basket/cart related, but it's one of my pet peeves while grocery shopping to get behind somoene who's just meandering as slowly as possible down the isles, or they take forever picking out a product and just stand there. Choosing which can of corn to get shouldn't be that hard of a decision. ;)

i use my hands. i can juggle a lot before i need a basket...like last night...apples, butter, butterscotch chips, walnuts, cream, hairdye, lettuce, cucumber, green onion...my incredibly dextrous fingers managed that like a pro....and carts? carts are for the weak!

I grab a PC - I do my grocery shopping on line. Ah such bliss to have it delivered to my house, especially at Christmas.
No more bashed ankes or feet run over by (in the UK we call them shopping trolleys).

No more negotiating my way around groups of people who stand and chat for ages in the middle of the shopping aisles. :)

I think when women shop, it tends to be more 'family' shopping, but if a guy is at the grocery, its more likely he's only buying for himself. So the woman will need the cart, while a guy only needs a basket. I usually grab a cart, unless i know i just have a few things i can carry.

Hmm... in my cart you'll usually find tuna, chips, soda, water, frozen pizza, single serve mac n cheese, bread, maybe soup or rice sometimes. but those are my standards.

Funny you should ask, Jullianna. This is a long story, but it's on the subject.

I was just starting my shopping career, so I let my older sister (whom I'll never trust again) "take the helm", as they say. She gave the list a quick glance, and told me we didn't need a basket OR a cart! Only 5 items, she said.

Well, we get to that aisle all guys hate, the one that involves cleaning ones self, and the list requires of us two JUMBO packs of toilet tissue. Not the puny ones mere mortals buy, I'm talking the Doomsday Prepper size.

I opted for the bear hug, one arm around each vast fluffy package. I could barely see over the top. I walked through the entire store that way, looking like I couldn't wait to get home and try it out. A wide-eyed refugee from a chili-eating contest.

I have spent some time thinking it over. I think when it happens again, I'll carry them George W. Bush style, slung under each arm. It's about the best way to rock 48 rolls of toilet paper.

Fortunately, it has been many years now, and the mental trauma...

Descyple and Nuke's comments about shopping habits in another thread reminded me of something strange I noticed over the weekend. I went shopping with a friend and waited for her to come out of the restroom at one of the stores for a looooooong time. While I was waiting I noticed that women would come in and grab a cart and guys would grab one of those small baskets with handles. Is that a thing with guys or what?????

I ponder very bizarre things. Indulge me. :D

While I'm being nosey, what would I normally see in your grocery cart? :)

I use carts, half-carts and baskets.
Carts when I know I am going to buy a lot of stuff.
Half-carts when I need a basket full of stuff, but don't want to lug the basket around.
Baskets when I need a few items and not enough room to tempt me to buy more.

My shopping is based around my need to have cat food in the house.

Jullianna, it's funny that you said in your experience you usually see the women go for the carts and the men go for the baskets, because I am actually the opposite. I much rather prefer a cart instead of a basket. I prefer a cart, because even at my age I like to give the cart a hard push and then quickly put my feet on the back and "ride like the wind" down the produce isle - lol.

Would you just be honest, for once, and admit that the reason you use a cart is because in your old age you need it to lean on and walk.
