HOLY means to be set apart or sanctified. To be in place to be used for what the Creator intended. First of all God is “set apart” from all he has created in order to be worshipped.
He asks us to be set apart from the world and its ways of thinking and all the things that would get a hold on us. The word holy does not mean perfect or pure. It only means “set apart”.
That is our holiness. We are told to “come out from among them” and be separate (holy). We must take our thinking from the truths as God speaks them in His word. We must act in opposition to how the world acts by following in the steps of Jesus.
He asks us to be set apart from being manipulated and used by the world. We are to be only available for his use…for his manipulation as we surrender to the Holy Spirit. That is our holiness.
Our flesh wants to conform to the world and be accepted. It wants to keep things calm and please people by agreeing with them. There is a certain amount of discomfort in “going against the grain” of what others think, and doing what Jesus would do. Our pride wants to be seen as important and so we sometimes let ourselves be manipulated or used.
The question we need to ask ourselves is what do we need to separate ourselves from that has a hold on us? In what way are we being manipulated or influenced by the world around us? Is the truth being compromised in our living? Are we taking on the habits of the world?
God is only telling us this because he knows that our separation will give us more freedom and peace. Jesus said that His yoke is easy and light. The world’s yoke is oppressive and heavy.
God has always loved to receive offerings. To respond to His invitation to be holy is to give and offer ourselves in a beautiful way We will then be more undivided in our devotion. We will more easily flow with His Spirit.
