Earlier in this same epistle, Paul noted that the apostles themselves were "made a spectacle to angels" (I Corinthians 4:9). IOW, the angels are watching what is transpiring here on earth and they are actually referred to as "the watchers" in the book of Daniel. What then are they "watching"? It seems to me that one thing that they are "watching" is to see whether or not things are being done "decently and in order". When it comes to the topic of marriage which Paul was discussing in our text, there is delegated authority in that a husband is to be the head of his wife even as Christ is the head of His church. Contextually, it seems to me that Paul was saying that a wife ought to be under her husband's authority because the angels are watching.

I know elsewhere in the bible it says the angels desire to look into things pertaining to the church, so it probably means they see us giving the proper respect to God's order like they do.
 
You know, I bet we are a bit of a curiosity to the angels, since we are lower than they are and the man Jesus was created lower than them, it must be of great interest as to just how the Spirit works in us to make us want to be obedient to God.
 
The context of the whole thing seems to point at the woman having a choice to cover her head or have her hair cut short based upon the glory of God and the fact that man is made in his image and the woman is of the man....Like the book of Revelation being written unto the messengers of the churches (pastors) the word angels seems to be better understood as those who are in the position of and as the messenger(s) of the church at Corinth....because the PASTOR (messenger, angelos) has the right to stand up and profess and teach about the authority that a woman has over her own head... and it is her choice....

Just how I took it off the hip and 5 minutes of reading it a few times a looking up a few words...??

Plainly, I think it means EXACTLY what it says.... there is a host of heaven watching us and angels to watch over us... and that is exactly what it is referring to.

I have noticed Utah seems to think he possess omniscience... he cannot just read the words as... maybe I notice Crossnote seems to have a pretty well formed theology... so my inclination is... he isn't just asking cuz he hasn't thought about it considerably already.

The actual head coverings that Paul was speaking about were these:

1. A wife's spiritual head covering - her husband
2. A wife's natural head covering - her hair

Paul's point was that if it isn't shameful for a wife to disregard her spiritual head covering or to usurp authority over her husband, then let her also shave her head or remove her natural head covering. In regard to the God-given authority (which is not synonymous with abuse or domination, btw) of a husband in relation to his own wife, Paul later said in this same epistle:

"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order." (I Corinthians 14:34-40)

Contextually, "your women" were "your wives" who were instructed to "ask their husbands at home" and this is part of the "all things" that Paul was instructing the Corinthians to "do decently and in order". Going back to "the angels" for a moment, it seems as if they are watching over things to see whether or not they truly are "done decently and in order" and I believe that this is what Paul was talking about in the text from chapter 11. IOW, a wife ought to have her husband as her spiritual covering because that is the "order" that God created for marriage where the husband is representative of Christ and the wife is representative of His church even as Paul explained in Ephesians chapter 5.
