Jesus said the poor will always be among us as a reply to Jesus refusal of the ointment to be used to help the poor. Does that mean we are not to be compassionate towards the poor? No, of course not. What this means is that we are to serve Jesus Christ first and make Him our top priority of the day. We are to worship Jesus and spread the love of Christ. This love will spill over into helping the poor because one is changed spiritually.

Do we help the poor so as to be saved? No. True salvation in a person's life naturally results in good works. Do we as believers work so as to end world poverty, end world hunger, and create world peace on Earth? No. That's not our job. Our job is to abide in the will of God and to follow His Word in what it says by faith. Yes, we are to help the poor, the hungry, and create peace as a way of life. But again, these things are a naturally result if you abide with the Spirit of God (Who is the source of salvation (1 John 5:12)). Are we to take up arms as believers and destroy anyone who is against us to create world peace, to end world hunger, and poverty? Again, that is not our job. God right now could end world hunger and poverty if He wanted to. Remember when God fed His people in the wilderness with manna? Do you remember how He made it so their clothes would not deteriorate off of them? The Lord our God could also stop all wars right now if He wanted to, as well. He could stop all conflicts. Freeze everybody in their tracks or prevent them from doing harm. So why doesn't He? Why doesn't He do these things? Because God desires all people to repent of their sins by faith. For without faith, it is impossible to please Him. So if we lived in a world where we could see God intervening in such a way whereby a lot of people would know it was God, then we would no longer be living by faith. For faith is the vehicle that allows us to access the grace that saves us. No faith. No saving grace.

So when you see death, disease, suffering, the poor, and sin in this world, it is not that God is allowing these things because He doesn't care. He is allowing these things so as to give man space to repent of his wickedness. But make no mistake. One day Jesus will return with His saints and they will destroy all the evil, sin, and poverty in this world. Jesus will then usher in a new Kingdom of righteousness and make all things new.

Does this mean we are not to be compassionate to those who are not fortunate? Again, no it does not.

True Christians will always help those who are in need (Because the Spirit will convict them to do so).
