Being Rich tends you to do evil things?

For the moment you hoard a bunch of useless junk that does not fulfill a basic need, then you are witholding money that could be given for God's purposes and plans for your own selfish reasons. Comparing the basic needs between a technological flourishing culture versus one that is not flourshing technologically is not a good example to prove the case in hoarding riches. Both cultures are meeting basic needs and they are not hoarding a bunch of junk unless certain individuals in that culture were to start in doing such a thing. For one could be rich even back in Bible times. How was this possible? By hoarding a bunch of things that they really did not need.

1 Timothy 6:5
"Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself"

and yet rich men have already gone to heaven...leaving their riches behind of course

Jesus was actually saying that a person cannot be saved on their own merits...he was not saying that if you have money you go to hell which is the interpretation you appear to be putting on it

The rich young ruler told Jesus he had kept the commandments and now he wanted to know what else he had to do...

remember, that NO ONE has EVER kept the commandments, so Jesus was actually being a little sarcastic in His reply

you would need to do a study on Jewish thought of the day with regards to their attitudes towards wealth...they believe that if you were wealthy, God had blessed you

You cannot take one verse and conclude such a gigantic one size fits all answer...Jesus was using hyperbole

i think Jesus meant exactly what He said. i dont think He was being deceitful, exaggerating or using hyperbole, these are tools of Satan, not Jesus.
this is my understanding of the passage. rich people are consumed with their riches. they devoted all their time to getting there, no time for friends, family or the Lord. their cup is full and theirs no room left for the Lord.
makes perfect sense to me.

Being rich can better enable bad habits that can be bought with a person who has a decent amount of cash and they can buy it whenever. But it doesn't make evil apparent as compared to someone who is poor.

You see homeless people who often turn to drugs and alcohol when they have the chance instead of using the little money people might give them to help them get food and a temporary roof over their head. You see people who just about have enough to pay their bills that can still go into debt if they spend more than what they can afford or pay back. The only difference between the rich and poor for when they use money to obtain these idols is that one can easily obtain and have it last longer than the other.

Perfect sense to one person is just plain silly and fear mongering and ignorance tooting to another

Don't you find it odd how much you sound like Judas thinking that the perfume poured out on Jesus could have been sold and the money given to the poor?

Frankly, you can go live in a cave if you think the god you believe in has called you to that...but you absolutely CANNOT have the mind of the Lord for every person here and since you do not have an accepted understanding for scripture, you cannot throw cherry picked verses at anyone either.



If Peter told Ananias the money he got for the sale of his property was ALL his to keep, who are YOU, Jason, to say otherwise?

He was making a point that makes perfect sense to me. i thought i explained it in the response. here is another example of what i see in that teaching. you have a rich man that has everything, several homes, exotic cars, servants that wait on him and all the rest of it, then you have a poor guy that has little to nothing. which one spendds more time dwelling on our Lord and spirituality?

once a year we do a fund raiser for the fire dept, its a volunteer fire dept. we have to go to all the homes in the dist, i hate it. funny thing i have learned. the poor will always give so much more than the rich.

Jesus was saying that a person cannot earn their way to heaven...but with God nothing is impossible...meaning God will make a way (which of course He did)

go read some commentaries...several they will all say the same thing though...check it out in Greek and learn about the audience Jesus was speaking to

and finally...don't pop a verse out of its setting....you will never understand what is really being said

So when you quote a scripture ...your trying to show people the truth...when someone quotes a scripture to you...its a personal attack? Wow...maybe that scriptures convicts you...but you think others need to feel convicted...but not you? Odd...very odd!

What you are calling a personal attack, is someone who refutes your unbiblical doctrine

You do not respond to scripture yet you toss out your cherry picked verses like blossoms at a wedding

How about Peter telling Ananias ALL the money was His to keep? Peter did not even tell him to give 10%..

If Peter did not say he had to give all his money, why do YOU? are you a higher authority than scripture?

if i am so wrong why do you not dispure what i said? if rich people are so much more spiritual than the poor then why do they need the riches in the first place? its ok i know you wont answer that.
people obsessed with riches back then are no different than those today.

i think its a big deal cause of all the problems it causes. its a false security. how many times do we hear people say they want to help but have no money, people are starving but wheres the money gonna come from. if you want to help someone find out what they need and help em, if someone needs food take em food. people obsess over money, something that has no independent reality of its own. money makes the world go around, im shocked at how many really believe that.

jaybird88 I agree with you on that.....so here is a example of money we know that the US deficit is in the trillions....do you know how much a trillion dollars is......if you spent I million dollars a day from the time of Jesus's birth till now you wouldn't touch it.. so how will we ever pay it off?
