Wine is mentioned lots of times in the Bible. Does that mean God is in favor of your decision to consume it in abundance? Not necessarily. Some theologians believe the wine of the Bible times was much weaker than the wine you would find in a grocery store today. That's why "Jesus drank wine" is not necessarily your best argument for God's approval on your getting drunk.
In fact, the Bible specifically states in Ephesians 5:18 "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit..." Many churches use that Scripture to support the notion that getting drunk is a sin. Those churches may view alcohol consumption an innocent act until the person becomes drunk....at which point it becomes a sin.
However, it would still be considered sinful for persons under the legal drinking age a sin (whether or not they become drunk) because Hebrews 13:17 states "Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority."
Whether a sin or not, it is unwise to consume alcohol at all if someone has abused alcohol in the past. A history of family alcoholism should also serve as a sharp warning to steer clear of alcohol. Some people might think drinking alcohol is fun, but if it gets in the way with our relationship with God or our loved ones...start 2015 off sober and serve others by offering to be the designated driver instead. Who knows? You might save someone's life. God bless!
Best wishes in
2015!!
