Is it really sensible for us to decide or learn who is compatible with us on the basis of browsing people's profiles?

Nope. Obviously, people only post their best qualities on dating websites. Knowing if someone is compatible involves months of knowing them on a casual or platonic level. They'll also try to exaggerate the things that they know other people will like ("you like photography? Well this guy LOVES photography." -Guy who used Instagram a couple times in college) Those websites try to streamline that by skipping the part where you actually learn about the person as they are in real life.

I agree with AAA. Lay a good foundation by getting to know someone really well.. this takes quite some time and patience .. :)
I wouldn't base my foundation of a relationship simply by reading their profile .

I try to put all my worst qualities up front...that way a woman can realize just how low she'll have to set her standards to be with a chippy chappy like moi. LOL

Yeah...profile relationship seeking...bad. I hate filling out profile garbage, especially when they ask for a minimum of 100 characters for about me. I'm sorry, I talk about myself enough as it is without ranting on and on about being a phony. I'm a dude, I like music, I have kids, that is all anyone needs to know.

Word up! lol I never was much on these crazy forms either, where they are all in your face..."You have to this, that or the other" My response (at least in my head is always) "There's only 3 things I HAVE to do in this life...Serve God,Stay Black, and Die!" (yes, yes,I know...you might be thinking..but Jim,yer' not black. And you'd be correct in this thinking,as I love that phrase so much,I stole it from a guy I used to work with at a restaurant,so stop judging me now.) ;)

Bahahaha. I can say so many good things about myself on my profile and none of them won't be true. But how will you know that?

I've met a lot of people I like online but I don't think actually dating someone you met online is a good idea. Unless they happen to live really close, I imagine it would just be a huge hassle.

Yes, by all means date the guy who puts on his profile the following:

He's 25 years old (he's 60+)
Athletic (He watches sports while eating Cheetos)
Works out (He gets off of the couch occasionally to use the bathroom)
Loves art (He likes the Cartoon Channel)
Loves music (Anything he can play air guitar, but never dance to)
Loves children (Great for retrieving the remote control when he drops it or needs someone to bring him more Cheetos)
Loves animals (They taste great with ketchup)

Never take the time to get to know anyone as friends first. Go straight to dating them or you'll ruin the surprise! :)

oh my. a lot of truth to that.

No. I don't know of anyone that does that. A profile can be a start. You may see something that catches your attention and decide to talk to the person more, but i know no one that goes by a profile alone.
Though there are guys on this site who just PM every woman in chat and ask to date or marry them. Long as their female, doesn't matter their age, or even marital status.

I think, there are still lots of profile infos that need encryption. Another field of interest to study with.. hehe

Basing the decision of compatibility doesn't really rest on the words written on any profiling, but isn't it a start of a conversation that would lead to further communication?

There was a research conducted which results to conclusion that people's behavior and preferences change from meeting online to finally meeting face-to-face. If there's any of you would agree on this that:

From online meeting - Men's major preference of attractiveness is the physical, while for Women' is the earning capacity. But then, when meeting face-to-face, those preferences had changed, and it has no significance on the attractiveness. What becomes the visible preference when meeting is the "persona", or the connection that they have when together.

Well then, in that research, when using Online Dating as the first step of looking into that special relationship, it has been advised to meet face-to-face soon.

I want to be a 25 year old croation from greece that's a model for sculptresses. Now...if I could just find the right profile picture...

I've online dated before I go by pictures and I refuse to spend months of talking back and forth I say meet up right away .not desperate just dont want to waste time

picking based on online profiles seems like it would be closely akin to picking a lawyer based on their late night TV commercial.
