The Civil War soldier grabbed his Bible that his fiance had given to him and slipped it into
the special pocket that she had sewed for him in his soldier's tunic. It was Christmas
eve and he wanted to read the Christmas story that night from his Bible while he was on picket duty.
There was a full moon that night and as he was reading it he heard a rustling in the bushes across the field.
He placed the Bible back in his pocket and grabbed his musket, but it was too late, he fell back to the ground and
looked dead.
In the morning he woke up and the surgeon was looking at him. You are the luckiest soldier on earth, he told the
young soldier! The Bible had stopped that bullet that was aimed at his heart. After he awoke...he was sore but
fine. Later he learned that his fiance had sewed a metal plate in the cover of his Bible and she told him how
she prayed that the Lord would use it to preserve his life in the war. He did survive it and they had several
children after their wedding. It was a terrible war, but there survive several accounts of objects deflecting
bullets, including pocket watches, playing cards, and several instances of Bibles.
This story appeared in a 19th century newspaper and later in much more recent times in an historical Civil War magazine.
