has anyone done a study on,

2Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 At the designated time Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. 4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering.

What Sabbath or appointed time is being observed here?

Leviticus 23:27“The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present a food offering to the Lord.

Matthew 8:29
“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

Cain tilled the ground which requires time to pass before you can harvest. ...Seasonal harvest.

I think we have to first look at all that was happening at the time a scripture was talking about, and what spiritual meaning the happening was illustrating.

If we look at this story, it shows that only blood was acceptable for an offering for atonement. So, it wasn't talking about time needed for harvest, or the appointed time Christ was talking about, but a time that was designated for the rite surrounding atonement.

What we can learn from this is that from the time of Cain, at the beginning, we were asked to atone for our sins and it is only blood that we can use for that, not any fruit of our labors.

No Sabbath or appointed time was being observed here, those hadn't been given yet. The translation you're using is wrong. The KJV has the accurate rendering of that verse. "As time passed it came to pass that Cain..."

Gen 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

RedTent I agree with you on that accept for the last part. There was no atonement needed then sin was not imputed until the law came.

Rom_5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

Rom_5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

Genesis 4:7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Romans 10:17 for faith is from the hearing ear, and the hearing ear is from the word of God.

Revelation 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made clothes from animal skins for the man and his wife and dressed them.

Abel's sacrifice had all the attributes of a burnt offering. A Blood sacrifice offered as a covering for sin.

Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Job also did blood sacrifices showing this was a known way of God.

So I was thinking this could be the weekly Sabbath sacrifice of 2 Lambs.
I am just looking for something that ties it all in a nice way together.

I don't know 4enlightment, to me it looks like they were just giving offerings to the Lord. I believe the high priest was the only one that could make a sin offering.

You may be right Shilo. There isn't a lot of detail given to us in Genesis, but it does seem logical that they may have been doing this for some appointed time. Interesting, if you learn more about this, let me know. I am interested also.

As good as your point is and the sabbath is to be kept we must not add or take away from the word they were just offering things to God that is all

The appointed time was when they were old enough to bring an offering unto the Lord, they were no longer under someone else's covering; Cain and Able were twins, thus they brought this offering at the same time. This whole scripture is over birthrights, scepters and thrones. Cain was born first from Eve, and he was rejected through his offering, and the second born was accepted over him. ie Jacob and Esau, or Judah's twins. much of the Old Testament was a struggle over birthrights and birth lineages, to the time of Christ. Why was Jesus' lineage important? Why are all of the lineages in the Old Testament important? There must be a covenant line to the King; Satan is driven throughout the entire time to Messiah, to corrupt this covenant anointed line from Adam and Eve where ever he found it. Jesus had a birthright from the line of Seth, eventually those who's father was Satan kills Him too. It just takes a lot of time to study these things out, but also, time to ponder and see things you cannot now see!

[h=3]Genesis 4[/h]King James Version (KJV)

4 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

'Numbers 28:9 On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect, together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with olive oil.

I could have been misunderstanding but it has been shown that Cain and Abel are spiritual offspring of Eve and the new found knowledge in the previous chapter. Adam's generations come in chapter 5 as shown by....

5*This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

""""""2*"Male and female" created he them; and blessed them, and called "their" name "Adam", in the day when they were created."""""

God had left Adam and his family alone, and they were waiting on God to return, to see what He's was going to do with them. Abel offering was accepted and which it was to give them a grace period to redeem themselves. Abel had died but God made an memorial to him by having the people to sacrifice a lamb, so that He will remember Abel, the first one that had kindle His heart.

Hebrews 11:4
By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.

Hebrews 12:24
to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

Exodus 24:8
Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Matthew 26:28
This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

well have to look into this more it could be the designated for cain and Able because they were now of age. The Lord can put more then one story in a story. Thank you

The Sacrifices of Cain and Able seem to be linked to a pattern of time. “In the course of time.” Literally, “at the end of days.” What is the end of days suggested by the context? What would contextually mark the course of time?
Popular options:
1.The end of a seven day period.
2. The anniversary of the end of creation. The problem with both of these theories is that they cannot be arrived at from the contents of the context. The only temporal indicator offered by the text is that of the time of harvest. Thus, the course of time from one harvest to the next. We know this because of the type of sacrifice both men are offering. “And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he ALSO brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.” Both men are presenting the offering of first-fruits, one of the flock and one of the earth. Both are legitimate sacrifices. Cain, being a tiller of the ground naturally offers the first-fruit of his crop. As a keeper of the flock, Able naturally offers his first-fruit of the flock. What implications can we generalize from Able's offering up the fat portions of his sacrifice?
1. That the offering of sacrifice had already been regulated by both time and procedure.
a. It was offered at the proper time - at the end of days.”
b. There is no separation of the fat from the sacrifice. It was offered up as a whole sacrifice.

2. That sacrifices were a matter of instruction. How did they know to offer these sacrifices and how did they know how to offer these sacrifices in such a way that would be acceptable to the Lord? This had to be revealed instruction. Even if they received the practice from their father Adam it still had to have been received initially from the Lord. This does not appear to be their first sacrificial experience.

3. This may also suggest the possibility that other types of sacrifices were also practiced that did not require the separation of
the fat portions. Certainly the sacrifice of Cain did not.

4. There are no indicators from the text that the sacrifice of Able had any connection to atonement or even contrition. In other words, this is not a sin sacrifice.
a. The is no sprinkling of blood mentioned.
b. There is no removal of the intestines or the refuse mentioned. This is a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Cain offered his first-fruits as a matter of thanksgiving. This is the nature of any first-fruit offering. The text says that Able offered ALSO of his first. Both men are offering the same sacrifice. Why then was Cain's sacrifice not accepted? This rejection seems to stem from Cain's strained relationship with his brother.

Cain did not bring his first fruits he tried to come to God on his own terms.

Jude 1:11 Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion.

Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
