What would they boast about being humble? Then they were not really humble were they?

I would also add that since the condition to receive the gift of eternal life is the same for everyone, faith in/trust in God's good faith offer, no one can boast from that point of view either.

If not? That part of the verse does not pertain to you.

For when it was written about boasting, many Jews who submitted to the Pharisees
were getting from the Pharisees as list of works to do in order to secure their salvation with God.

must be saved because of all the works they do.

It was why Jesus hated the Pharisees so much who were making a mockery of God's salvation

Unbelievers are not the focus of Romans 8:7-8
Paul is writing about the experience of believers... it is a call for believers to live according to the Spirit.

Paul says that since we have the Spirit, we can now live for God (Romans 8:9), but that requires we make the choice to do so.
