Makes a lot of sense. Totally depraved people with 0 chance of being saved to begin with are further hardened to have extra guilt for God to punish.

The bondage of the will, total depravity or inability was a major, foundational disagreement between the Reformers and Rome. The Reformers' Position

Martin Luther made this the central theme of his famous work The Bondage of the Will (De Servo Arbitrio, 1525), written in response to Erasmus, who defended free will. Luther argued:
  • Fallen humanity is spiritually dead and enslaved to sin
  • Humans cannot choose God, prepare for grace, or contribute anything to their salvation apart from regenerating grace
  • Faith itself is entirely a gift of God, not a human decision
John Calvin similarly taught total depravity in the Institutes:
  • After the Fall, the human will is in bondage to sin
  • Natural man cannot even desire or seek God without effectual calling
  • Grace is not merely an aid offered to all, but effectively accomplishes what it intends
Rome's Position

The Council of Trent (Session 6, Chapter 5, Canon 4-5, 1547) explicitly condemned the Reformers' view:
  • Humans retain genuine freedom to consent to or resist grace
  • While grace is necessary, humans can "dispose" themselves toward justification
  • Salvation involves cooperation between divine grace and human free will
  • To deny human freedom in conversion was deemed heretical
Why This Was So Significant
This wasn't just academic—it shaped everything downstream……….

Most opposed to Calvinism in this thread are holding to Roman Catholic doctrine!

It really is insanity, along with their proclamations that god only loves people once he regenerates them.
And here were maligned for pointing out the depravity of their doctrine.
Who are the disingenuous ones... hmm.

All those views hold the same belief in man inheriting a sin nature, whereas I believe we develop a sin nature after we are born, so I am in neither camp :)

Psalms 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

You two (it takes two to tangle) illustrate how playing verbal ping-pong is pointless.
It can also be pictured as having a bout with a tar-baby and winding up stuck or as trapped going in circles.

When I sensed this happening to me on CC, I decided it would be better to bet I am right and wait until heaven to collect.
(Now my problem is that I have kept no record of those with whom I made the bets, so I may not remember who to collect from :^)

God being able to be all places at all times knew at the foundation of the universe who would CHOOSE to accept Christ and who wouldnt. Those that would are who was/is predestined. God wants all to be saved but knew not all would be.

Best just to ignore, they are always looking to set traps, @Genez saw it a long time ago, I should have heeded his insight back then many months ago.

Differences in understanding is one thing. Lies are another thing. If you are okay with liars and lying, feel free to accept them.

(BTW, I bet your view is closer to correct than Cam's, although it is difficult to pin him down.)

Yes this true, even if we say Calvin was a man of his time, surely if Paul was able to realize the error of his ways, it is legitimate to ask why Calvin did not.

As far as I know he defended his actions to his death, regarding how he dealt with the people in Geneva and those he considered heretics in fact he defended his actions.

A man who was well educated, literate, had access to the scripture and learned the Greek as well, something is amiss and it is fair to recognize it.
