Can God’s law save you?
John Blanchard

‘God’s law is summed up in the Ten Commandments, which form such a perfect basis for man’s religious and social life. A mayor of a city in America, speaking about the social and moral problems: He quoted and said: “There are more than 2,000,000 laws on the statute books. But none of these would be needed if the Ten Commandments were observed!”

But notice that the Ten Commandments are laid down, not in the first chapter of the Bible, but much later in the book of Exodus 20: 3-17. In other words, God’s law is not responsible for man’s SIN, but neither can it remedy it! Though that was not the purpose for which it was given.

The Bible reveals a number of purpose for which the law was given – to reveal something of God’s nature and will, to promote the health and welfare of the human race, and to give guidelines for God’s people in their daily living. But supremely the law was given to reveal the reality and nature of human SIN.

GOD's law is actually summed up in two commandments that aren't in the 10 commandments: love GOD, love you neighbor as yourself. The 10 were simply 10 given to Israel to be subject to and observe; they were never given to the gentiles.

The ten commandments were to be kept perfectly under the old covenant law and no man was able to keep It perfectly.

The two commandments were given by GOD In CHRIST who kept the old covenant law perfectly and nailed It to the cross because It was against us and brought In the new covenant and before he left he gave Grace to all who believe In the WORD of GOD.

Gods law cannot save. Gods law can only condemn. Gods law is the schoolmaster that points us to Christ. Only grace can save.

Ga 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

By the law comes knowledge of our sin and that sin becomes personal. We need a personal Savior to forgive our sin and give us eternal life.

For the cause of Christ
Roger

But supremely the law was given to reveal the reality and nature of human SIN.

The ten commands were part of a covenant that God made with Israel as their sovereign Lord on the grounds that He had redeemed them from Egypt. Because of what He had done by them out of compassion He called on them as a nation to respond by following certain basic laws, most of which had long been in practise.

The ten commands covered basic human sins. Attitude towards God, murder, adultery, theft, false witness in court and finally the need not to covet.

On the whole they were not difficult to observe, and the rich young ruler (who had no reason to do most of them) could say that he had observed them all. Apart from the law on coveting he was probably right.

It is only when those commands are amplified as they were by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount that they become more difficult for us to observe. Otherwise most of us would not consider murdering, adultery (stealing another man's wife) stealing or false witness.

In a fairly primitive society they were very important. Those crimes were common. In a society which has grown up on Christian values they have marginal effect without the amplification by Jesus. They would indeed only produce marginally good citizens.

The two great commandments of Jesus are far more demanding and compelling

It is important to know that for Jews of Jesus’ day, obeying God’s commandments did not earn salvation. Obedience was the rightful due of the (male) Jew who had taken upon himself the yoke of the Torah, and who participated in the covenant community. Obedience was not the way to heaven, but the way by which the witness of God’s work among the Jewish people took form.

The law on stone was not removed, it was transferred onto human hearts(2cor3:3) what was removed was the penalty for breaking it, BECAUSE it had been transferred onto the heart of the believer

God's law does not save !!!

Obedience to the law does not save anybody as no person by themselves can uphold it, but after one is born again obedience in keeping the commandments of God are a product of a true sign of one who is born again by the Holy Spirit.

We are given an easier task under the Lord Jesus to walk in love, and by that love will establish and uphold the moral law of God. Because love does no harm to another.......Romans 13:10

The Holy Spirit guides us to keep us in the line by strengthening us were we are weak, and chastising us when we start to go astray.

The rich young ruler thought he kept the 10 Commandments since birth, but Jesus showed him he actually didn't because his faith was in his possessions !!!

No, he did keep the 10 commandments. That's why Jesus loved him. Then he said that if you want to be perfect, "Follow me". The clear message is that following law won't make anyone perfect, but following Christ will.

It's just like the transfiguration on the mount. Peter, James and John saw Moses and Elijah with Christ, but when Peter wanted to honor them all together, GOD said, "Hearken to my son", and Moses and Elijah disappeared. The power of the kingdom had come.

This is the manifestation of your heresy that we are given grace to follow the 10 commandments.

The law Is GOD's perfect standard of righteousness, but under law we are carnal sold under sin and not acceptable In our own strength. The spirit was willing but the flesh was weak.

Thank you JESUS for making a way.

Galatians 3:24-26King James Version (KJV)

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

The law cannot save anyone, but it does bring people to Christ when it brings them to an end of themselves and they come to the realization of their need of the Messiah. No longer self-righteousness but a righteousness by faith, an imputed righteousness.

Romans 9:30King James Version (KJV)

30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

Philippians 3:9King James Version (KJV)

9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

I'm not sure why people keep mentioning the ten commandments. The standard I higher than that. Just read the beatitudes(matt chs 5-7)

Sure obeying the law can save you if you perfectly obey it without one slip. But no one has succeeded thus far and no one ever will
So I trust in what Christ did for me at calvary for salvation, not the law

No the law can not save you. Only God can save you.

We can do nothing to save ourselves, we are 100% reliant on Gods Grace and power to save us. We can not add anything to our salvation.

It is all about what Jesus can do. What we can do is summed up in one word: Nothing.

Gal 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

nope law can't save can't give life. as it is written:

Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

The law could not do it it could not give life.

Jesus is life as it is written:

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

notice the issue is our weakness though:

Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Jesus did not come to condemn the law but sin in the flesh.

Gal 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

notice that again sin was the problem but Faith in Jesus is the answer not the law but faith in Jesus.

as it is written:

Hab_2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

GOD's law is actually summed up in two commandments that aren't in the 10 commandments: love GOD, love you neighbor as yourself.

If your faith is in God you will be in harmony with the first four. If you love your neighbor, as yourself, you will be in harmony with the last 6. That's all it means.

God's law is summed up in the Ten Commandments (which are in turn summarized in the two commandments). Technically, anyone who can keep the law can be saved by it, but that is impossible for humans. Because God is a just God, he cannot just overlook our sin, so he sent his perfect Son to live a perfect life and die for us. How's that for a legacy!!
