Rom: 3: 23-26
for all have sinned and fell short of the glory of God; and being justified freely by the grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;whom God set forth to be a PROPITIATION, through faith, in his blood. to show his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done aforetime, in the forbearance of God; for the showing, I say of his righteousness at this present season: that he might himself be just and the justifier of him that hath faith in Jesus.

Atonement repairs the separation between ourselves and God, even though we cannot really be separate and apart from our Creator.
Propitiation is atonement but with the added caveat of appeasing God's anger due to our fallen state since Genesis and Eden.

These verses makes it clear that Christ Himself and His shed blood are the propitiation for our sins, and the sins of the whole world:

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God (Rom 3:24,25)

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 Jn 2:1,2)

This means that Christ's one great sacrifice for sins is more than sufficient and satisfactory to God the Father in order to satisfy His just demands for the penalty for all sins, and the purchase of our redemption. It is on this basis that God justifies the ungodly and offers all mankind the free gift of eternal life. And no man can come to God the Father except through the blood of Christ.
