Well I finished reading the Alone in the World book. the author is very self-sufficent and only thinks of God one time because she's too focused on surviving in the wilderness and trusting her own instincts.
She does have a husband but he is twice her age and she's always writing how she needs to prepare for his death one day and be on her own. But you never know, she could be the first to go with all the risks she is taking, sometimes she goes on treks/expeditions on her own or with other companions and leaves him at 'home' cos he's older and slowing down.
So anyway when she goes to places where there's no hunting allowed she just takes her own provisions and seems to eat a lot of chappatis. I couldn't do what she does...although I tramped a bit in my youth, I don't know if I'd do it or survive being totally off the gird/on the run for more than a week. She did it for 7 years!
I think there is something romantic in wandering 'as lonely as a cloud' or being off in your own like Walden Pond or something, but those people that did that always had a comfortable life to go back to. The reality is, most refugees or people on the run doing it to survive don't have the choices she does. She deliberately makes it her way of life...many people don't have the luxury. They are escaping war, poverty etc, they not doing it for the hell of it.
Of course you don't need much $$ to do it, but you need experience and a tough mindset if you doing it for kicks.
