What is your position on the statues being taken down/replaced of the civil war figures in America? Personally, I dont like it. Trying to hide history because it makes you feel uncomfortable is a lie. The same thing for the confederate flag. Driving threw the south last year was a sad experience to think youd get in trouble for honoring the men and former slaves who died in the confederate army. Trying to cover up history is wrong. And im a yank, with plenty of African American friends I admire. History ought to be remembered, not adjusted because it makes you whine.

Why would you think a Christian is focused on the temporal and carnal when the Lord and Savior guides us to give Him 1st place in all things? :)(y):coffee:

I personally do not believe history is either temporal or carnal. God gave us history to learn and grow in the spirit. Trying to change history to satisfy some human desire is sinful. Thisismy makes a valid point worthy of discussion. Following the fifth commandment is putting Him first. IMHO.

I believe in freedom of speech. I also believe it should be up to the people who live where said statues or monuments are. If it's put to a vote, and the voters decide one way or another, it should be honored. Personally, I'd vote to have them removed. I don't believe in honoring people who fought a war for the right to own other human beings.

I am very much against the removal/replacement of the Southern statues.
A good portion of the monuments came about due to the efforts of widows and relatives (in other words, the efforts of a good many women...or many good women, I should say) as remembrance and honor of their brave loved ones who died.

About those statues in particular, I don't have an opinion. They aren't in my yard, I didn't fight in that war, none of my family has any statues they hold dear, none of us had slaves and none of us ever were slaves. So I don't really have a dog in the fight.

But about this kind of thing in general, I have observed that if everybody just gets on with their lives, eventually nobody remembers why these things are here and it doesn't matter any more. All kinds of things fade into obscurity real fast when people stop hollering about them.

But some people gotta keep picking at the scab, keeping it from ever really healing.

Strategically, from the side of the people who want to get rid of the statues, it would probably be best to just be quiet until everyone forgets the whole thing, then quietly start taking them out at night. So for the people who want to keep them, I guess be glad the people who want to get rid of them are not very strategic.

They do remove them overnight 🙄

For example, this one. I mention this one, because I had visited it a few times before it disappeared...

Of course the statues are a part of this carnal, temporal world which will pass away, and scripture guides us to focus on things above.
This is just the way we all need to renew the mind to see through the lens of the Father as required.

Where do you draw the line? Nobody is perfect. Einstein was a womaniser, both North and South had influential slave owners, as did Jefferson and Washington. George Whitfield promoted slavery (although he was appalled at the treatment of slaves). Personally, I'd have no statues to anyone anywhere. But that's just me.

If you don't get it I can't explain it to you. I have a brick wall just outside my front door I can go bang my head into if I'm ever so inclined.

Pie is part of this carnal world... But it's still delicious.

Certain songs full of profanity, self agrandizement and racial slurs are part of this carnal world... But they are still annoying.

Lots of things are part of this carnal world, but we still have to deal with them.

A Christian takes ALL things to Him for His guidance in dealing with ALL things.
A carnal person leans on their own understanding as they have not the mind renewed as required.
Sharing scripture is not "debate", renewing the mind as required ends confusion.

The American Civil War was not fought over slavery. It was fought over secession and states rights. Lincoln had anti-slavery beliefs, but his motive for feeing the slaves was to keep England from entering the war against the Union. England wanted the cotton for their mills and appeared willing to break the blockade to get it. Almost none of the men who actually fought the war owned slaves. People in the north were largely indifferent on the issue as the northern economy did not support holding slaves. Th monuments were not created to support slavery. That is a politically contrived myth.

Yep, states rights to own slaves and put them to forced labor. If slavery had nothing to do with it, why did the Confederacy enshrine it in their Constitution? The idea that the Civil War wasn't about slavery is the contrived myth. I'm sure all those guys in those monuments believed they were very heroic, but at the end of the day they were fighting so they could hold onto their slaves and the gravy train.

This video is by PragerU from ten years ago, back when they were still being honest.

"The constitution, it is true, secured every essential guarantee to the institution while it should last, and hence no argument can be justly urged against the constitutional guarantees thus secured, because of the common sentiment of the day. Those ideas, however, were fundamentally wrong. They rested upon the assumption of the equality of races. This was an error. It was a sandy foundation, and the government built upon it fell when the 'storm came and the wind blew.'
Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."—Alexander Stephens, Confederate Vice President, Savannah, Georgia, March 21, 1861

Ummm....you are correct.
Nobody is a Saint in war.
That doesn't mean that their abilities or tactics are not admirable. Each of these Confederate Generals were unique in the tactics they invented and used. They were extremely talented men in many ways.

The North would have lost the war if it was all about talented military leadership. Because the South had much more.

What the South did not have was competent political leadership. And that is the ONLY reason why the South lost....

It definitely wasn't superior moral high ground. (Morality was much worse from the north and continued to be decades afterwards).

Today as our political realm loses all competency except for figuring out how to stuff their pockets with wealth....(just like then)

I can't see things getting better anytime soon.
