Hi guys, I have noticed much music during the cold war 1950-1990 or so has a lot of good music but that the lyrics are heavily dystopic/end of world type lyrics esp about atom bombs.....

I would like to ask older people on CC, what was it like living in the cold war era? I've seen documentaries about practicing diving under desks (lol like that could save you :D) and doing other survival drills.....Did it affect your mentality/mindset growing up and if so how? Do you think it was overblown and was a way for people to accept post ww2 nuclear armament increasing on both sides or to keep people perpetually paranoid?

If you have interesting stories please do share as well...I'd like to listen/read the feedback about your cold war life experience..... :)

Lol nobody wants to post? maybe this thread has gone colder than the cold war? :P

Well my grandmother said that she was scared that nuclear war was in question.

Isn't it interesting that for at least a quarter century the cold war was "dormant" but now the psychopaths both in the US and Russia are now towing the cold war line again.....? Ever since 2014 there has been an undercurrent for war with Russia by the U.S.? Putin wants no part of it and is trying to remain peaceful but if his hand is forced oh boy watch out.....he's not someone to be trifled with.... imo.....

Here is a tune right from the Cold War era
https://youtu.be/14IRDDnEPR4
It's called 99 red balloons it's by Nena . She is a German artist I believe. The song is also in German.
it kind of sums up a lot of the thinking in the last days of the Cold War.

I remember being in school in the 70's. There was not much happening in terms of bomb drills. At that time, we pretty much knew that if there was nuclear war jumping under a 5lbs fake wood desk was not going to offer much protection. It is interesting though that in the 50-60's they actually forced kids to do such drills. Have to wonder that that was more mental programming than was actually protective. The 80's was less about fear of nuclear Armaggedon and more about the fascination of it with music and movies such as "The Day After", Pink Floyd "The Wall". And then the actual wall came down. We are presently sprinting to a hot war with Russia over the situation in Syria imo. It's like Ezekiel 39-39 getting ready to take the stage.

I'd be interested to hear from our more aged members about this too. Reading in a history book is one thing, but it's better to hear real-life accounts from people who were there. Was the Cuban Missile Crisis as big a "crisis" as it was made out to be? Were people really living in fear of nuclear war? Did people really hate the Soviet Union as much as is portrayed? What was it like when Kennedy got shot? Do you remember where you were on July 11, 1969? Stuff like that is interesting.

The cold war did affect peoples view of the world. During the 1950's most of the population had lived through WW2 so it was still a recent memory. During my teens there was an ever present threat of a war between the US and Russia. Ironically it was only the possession of Nuclear Weapons that prevented it happening. The Cuban Missile Crises in 1961
was the closest we ever came to WW3 I was 12 at the time and was scared witless. Music was not depressing but a form of escapism.

I remember seeing the wall.... My mother made me watch it lol. I'm not a big pink Floyd fan. I like another brick in the wall but that's it lol
