It is a caricature, no, worse than that, a distortion of scripture, and a twisting of what Paul said to the Corinthians. To have people come to this table, and approach these elements, thinking that you have to be by some performance of your own, worthy to partake.
Let every tradition be a lie that has made void the word of God. And, no matter how good the intentions of those who tried to lead you, and put you on a guilt trip in front of this table. They are simply wrong!

Does one come unworthily if they aren't saved or if their life is mired in unrepented sin?

Okay, I'll bite. How have Paul's words been distorted and how should we correctly understand them?

1) Paul never said, "Examine yourselves " to see if you are worthy. He said don't eat and drink " unworthily " , an adverb, that modifies the manner of partaking. And, you eat and drink " Unworthily", when you eat and drink not discerning the Lords body....

1) As we lift the cup, which contains the wine, which is the symbol of the blood of Christ, poured out, the life of the soul Leviticus says resides in the blood. And the outpoured blood was pouring out His life.

He was smitten, that we might drink the water of life. You don't make yourself worthy by any self examination, or any discipline of performance. We're made worthy by the blood of the lamb. You stand before t he table , a recipient of grace.

No guilt has any place here, it was all laid on Him. And we lift the cup and rejoice at the knowledge that God has provided life for us. Because Christ died that we might live.

1) There was bread at this table, because something else happened, equally a product of Gods grace. Not only did Christ die and pour out His blood, that we might be a recipient of life eternal, Isaiah says, He lifted our sicknesses and our infirmities from us, and carried them away.

And, " With His stripes , you were healed". At the Passover, blood on the door spared the life of the firstborn of the house. They ate the roasted lamb behind the closed door, that what the Psalms in 105 declares might be the case. They went forth and there wasn't a feeble one in their midst. He lifted sicknesses from us as well as bearing our iniquities and our transgressions.

1Co 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

1Co 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

1Co 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

1Co 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

The only way a person can eat and drink unworthily is if they have unrepentant sin and hold on to sin.

So they intentionally sin with the attitude they cannot cease from sin or are enjoying sin at least for the time being.

If you are enjoying sin not wanting to quit because you think you cannot or know it is wrong but you want to yabble dabble do sin then do not partake.

Because it goes against the purpose of what the cross represents which is to wash away sins.

If you are sinning and holding on to sin you are unworthy to partake for you are going against what the purpose of the cross is about to take away sins of those who repent.

Making a mockery of the cross by holding on to sins but eating and drinking representing Jesus body and blood that washes away sins.

It would be like someone holding a banquet to celebrate a certain thing but you are in there eating and drinking carrying on all the while you are against everything the banquet stands for.

So you are going to eat and drink unworthily which represents Jesus' body and blood but you are against what they stand for.

Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

If we hold on to sin then the blood of Christ cannot wash them away because God will not take away a sin we hold on to.

In this circumstance do not partake for you do not care about the purpose of the cross.

Which why did Jesus go to the cross to wash away your sins if you are not going to quit sinning anyway.

It would mean His death was in vain for you.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

A Spirit led person can be Christlike because we have the same power as Jesus to resist sin.

If you want to sin at least have the right attitude that it can be avoided if you apply yourself.

And do not partake if you are holding on to sin.

God knows whether you are holding on to sin or not.
