At Colossians 1:18 it tells us that Jesus was the first born of the dead. Meaning out of all the people who had died before him he was the first one to be resurrected to heaven. Another scripture that backs this up is John 3:13 it says: Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but the one who descended from heaven, the Son of man. So at the time this scripture was written no man who died had ever ascended to heaven.I had asked this question on another place but it was the wrong one, so here I am again with the same question. I am confused about where we go when we die. I know there is a heaven and hell, I know that for sure. It's just do we automatically go there right after death, or do we just go to sleep until jesus comes again and then we will be judged and be sent where we are destined to be then on. Does it say that in the bible anywhere. That the dead will walk among the living and there is going to be a new heaven.
If we don't go straight there then why do preachers talk about it and at funerals they talk about how the dead are in heaven watching over us now. I hope that someone can help me to understand this better.

Before Jesus died he said at John 14:3 if I go my way and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you home to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Therefore the dead would be in the grave until Jesus prepared a place for them. The scripture says this would occur when Jesus comes again. Jesus comes again during the “last days” so when we die we are in the grave, awaiting a resurrection as it says at John5:28,29.
(John 5:28, 29) . . .Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.
I don't know of a scripture that refers to dead walking among the living. If there is one it would have to be symbolic. The following two scriptures tell us about the condition of the dead. It would be impossible for the dead to walk.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5) “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”
(Ecclesiastes 9:10) . . .Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your might, for there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave, where you are going.
Revelation 21:1 speaks about a new heaven and a new earth, because the first heaven and earth have passed away. Again this is symbolic. It does not agree with the following scriptures:
(Psalm 104:5) . . .He has established the earth on its foundations; It will not be moved from its place forever and ever. . .
(Isaiah 45:18) For thus says the Lord—Who created the heavens, God Himself, Who formed the earth and made it, Who established it and did not create it to be a worthless waste; He formed it to be inhabited.
(Psalm 37:29) The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.
I hope my answer has been helpful. Have a nice day.
