At the age of 15 i was diagnoised with systemic lupus erythematosus. Dr would tell me to get on ssi etc..
now that i am 27 years old the ssi talk comes up and as we speak i already have a case with the court coming up, but my issue is i just dont wanna do this. please dont take me wrong but i dont consider myself disabled i call myself healed! my mom kinda pushes the issue with it, & says get my money okay yeah money is good for some things, but its just not everything (root of all evil) money doesnt make me happy. I am normal just like everyone else, i just have to have a lil special attention then others like taking meds, doing treatments & such. am i wrong for not wanting to pursue with the ssi? i rather work & leave a legacy of me being a successful teacher than to be called something i feel i am not

Don't be afraid of money, though. It's the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil, not money itself.

I think choosing to work when you are perfectly capable of working is what you should do. Well done.
 
Having useful work to do gives us a sense of purpose in life....so I'd say stay as active as possible. Maybe go part-time later if full -time is too much.

Good for you :) Many people who are capable of working, don't, and it's bankrupting our country.
 
I would take the money unless it means that you can't work (one or the other). Its not charity. There's no shame in taking it. Believe me, when you get older and are tired of filing income taxes every year and seeing a third of everything you earn going to the government you will wish you would have taken this money.
 
I applied for disability twice. The first time I was getting a lot better by the time my court date came up. So my lawyer asked the judge for disability from the time that I applied to my court date. And I was granted it. My lawyer said that if I get worse again that I could reapply and thats what I did.
Did you know you can collect disabilty and work part-time too. You can make up to so much per month. You can call the ss office and find out how much you can make. So you might want to think about how much you would be getting on it plus how much you can earn part time.
 
If you can work, work. Don't take the money. You obviously don't have a need for it. And when people who don't need it take it, then it short changes those who do need it, because they end up cutting back on services. I have been on disability 3 years now, and am so frequently feeling ill for one reason or another i can't imagine doing online classes let alone going to a job every day. But also recently they cut back the areas in which they cover. So now there is less help available for people who need it.
Also, i can tell you its worth it to keep working, and if you enjoy your work, then even better. I used to hate working, but now i find myself wishing i could get a job.

Yea that's how I feel I can physically work & I love working, but the issue collect ssi comes up. I rather for someone who can't physically provide for themselves etc let alone I carried a baby with no complications
 
I have been told by doctors that I have a very mild case of CP. My feet is turned over and out. I also have a speech impairment. I have gotten to the point that I can talk to others and it sounds like an accent reather than an impairment. When I was around 27, My twin brother and I went to the Vocational department with the department of Labor and they said we could get SSI disibility. They said it was up to us. I told them I would prefer to work as long as I can before going the route of disability. I worked from 1999 - 2009. I have gotten to the point where the only course of action is to have surgery to releive the pain in my feet. I am in the process of appling for disability. It is hard and a long process. One of the questions is "What type of work could you do before the disability? It is harder to get help after working. If you feel so strongly that disability isn't the way to go (after praying), then work. Make sure you follow Gods leading. Don't let no one tell you what you should do. Let God lead you. Let God lead you and he will use you and your disablity to reach other.

Typhani, don't believe for one minute that the government won't have enough to go around for everyone who qualifies. Thats baloney. The only time they make cuts is when they have a budget crisis and they DON'T say "well we can only afford to take care of 3/4 of them now", NO...they say, "EVERYONE in this program is going to be given less and/or people working in the program will be laid off". It NEVER has anything to do with denying qualified applicants or even the number of qualified applicants.

What Im saying is is that your decision to not take advantage of the service will not IN ANY WAY help someone else.

God bless you for wanting to stand on you own and be a great teacher. I hope your child comes to realize what a fantastic mother he or she has. To me, the answer to your question is simple; "Ask God.".

God knows your heart better than anyone else. He knows what you are capable of doing. He knows what you want out of life and, thus far, He seems to have agreed with your plans. (After all, it is He who gives you the strength to get through each day.)

Just based upon your brief post, I believe in my heart that God has Big Plans for you. I can foresee the power of your witness for Him, and I predict that you are going to change many people's lives.

God has laid it on your heart to not accept charity. Go with what He is telling you. And for those who would say "take the money and run", I wonder what the world would be like if everone like Joni Eareckson Tada had "taken the money and ran".

Hi "TP" & all power to your elbow & your baby's for having such a commendable attitude to life & what you want from it.
As a result of my brain injury I'm officially Registered Disabled. However I consider myself "Differently Abled".
I'm fortunate to have a caring employer who provides for me far more than equality legislation compels them to.
As a result, on my bad days or when I've suffered a bad seizure, I can work from home. So essentially my work has never changed. I still work as much as before. I still get bounced around Europe on various cases & am very lucky to be paid an embarrassing salary for the privilege.
However there is a difference between the sums that go into our bank accounts & the amount available to us. A regular sum is paid into trust for our kids, significant amounts support their education & I am a Trustee of a charity which works to get the homeless into a house & work.

I feel they will definitely have enough, if they didn't they wouldn't have given everyone on SS a raise recently.

I've recieved SS for a couple years now, but am able to work part time, I'm also allowed to try to start working full time and still be able to receive benefits and after the grace period decide if I'd like to keep trying or if it was too much.

You represent your entire generation well! :D

I've also been diagnosed with SLE, as well as UC, and medically qualify for disablilty, but don't take advantage of it because I have a v-e-r-y hard working husband who cares for me. ( <3 )

It couldn't be said better than what dmdave17 said, so hoorah to that, and to you!
