This is a good point indeed. Things could escalate into something of a sanction war. Now honestly, Russia can't really hurt the American economy per sanctions because our economy is much too mighty compared to Russia's, plus the Russian economy is mostly dependant on natural gas and oil exports (we get most our oil from Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, and of course produce most of our own natural gas.) HOWEVER, Europe on the other hand is very reliant on Russian energy exports. So it is conceivable that Russia could severely harm Europe's energy sector with counter-sanctions which would of course put major stress on America's alliance with Europe both militarily and diplomatically.
Oops one little mistake here. Venezuela is actually the third country from whom we get the most oil, not Kuwait, my bad.

That's a good point as well, I hadn't even considered Russia could play the Europe card. They could still hurt us without actually using sanctions of that nature though. The worst thing I could think of would be to terminate all activity that includes the U.S. Dollar as a reserve currency, just refuse to deal with it. It's already volatile at the moment and there has already been talks of dropping it as the world's reserve currency already. Now THAT would hurt. Way worse than the puny sanctions we imposed on them. Especially if other countries that aren't fond of us decided to follow suit. Switching to the Yuan would make China very happy I'm sure.

shortly after the new ukrainian government was appointed by the ukrainian parliament they indicated that they had no plans to back out of the treaty that allowed russia to maintain its naval base in crimea...and that treaty did not expire until at least 2042...
so russia's naval policy was not in any jeopardy...

it is also worth mentioning that crimea previously belonged to the tatar people...they were the majority population there until russia annexed crimea in 1783 and began systematic attempts to ethnically cleanse crimea of tatars...completed by stalin who deported the entire remaining tatar population of crimea to uzbekistan...
today there are about 245,000 tatars in crimea...and it appears that they are once again becoming the target of russian persecution...

Crimeans have always identified with Russia and have voted for annexation with Russia. It's called democracy.
An analogy would be when Texans voted to be annexed by the United States of America which the United States did causing Mexico to break off diplomatic relations with the United States.

How ironic and hypocritical for the elected leaders of a republic built on democratic principles (e.g. United States) to start a new Cold War with another republic built on democratic principles (e.g. Russian Federation) and see the iron curtain slam down in the process over what amounts to the will of the people of Crimea democratically choosing to align with Russia.
Maybe doing something about the U.S. economy would be a better step forward than trying to stop Texans from joining the Union in the Crimean sense.

You may want to read up on the military doctrine of Russia which is a codified legal document outlining when and how Russia may elect to use nuclear weapons.

As you can see per Russia's 2010 military doctrine, Russia limits it's ability to use Nuclear weapons purely in a defensive role stating that they can only be used "in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies, and also in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened."
I'm not trying to be Neville Chamberlain here but Russia has NO offensive nuclear policy in its military doctrine.
Furthermore, while the Russian command system is poised to obtain nuclear weapons release authority within 10 minutes from the President, the Defense Minister or the Chief of the General Staff through the Cheget nuclear suitcase in a system similar to what the United States uses, physical control of the unlock and launch authorization codes resides with the military. And note that there are rigid controls in place against an accidental launch.
This means that the General Staff has direct access to these codes NOT Putin or the Russian defense minister.
The Russian General Staff has two methods for launching nuclear weapons. Following the American pattern, the unlock and launch authorization codes held by the General Staff at their command centers can be sent directly to individual weapons commanders, who would execute the launch procedures. The crews onboard docked submarines, have demonstrated the ability to fire while surfaced at pier-side within 9 to 15 minutes after receiving the order.
Or, the General Staff could direct missile launches directly from command centers in the Moscow vicinity or alternative facilities at Chekhov, Penza, and elsewhere. This is a remote launch of land-based strategic missiles would bypass the subordinate chain of command and missile launch crews.
So if Putin went stark raving mad and began ordering the end of the world out of line with Russia's official military doctrine, the General Staff of the Russian military would assess his orders in context with Russia's military doctrine and refuse. If Putin truly went insane, he would be relieved by the Russian military of his position and a new president of Russia elected as per the Russian Federation's Constitution.

Exactly what do you want Obama to do? Start a war with Russia? Russia, hho was the nuclear capability to destroy maybe the entire US? Russia, who is also an ally of China? I'm not supporting Putin, but I also can't see what people are expecting Obama to do. The people made a vote, they want to be part of Russia. I don't even see how this is the US' business more than Russia's business.
