What is the difference?! Why is one more successful over the other?! I've heard "dating is practice for divorce;" is this true?! Do people still court nowadays?!
 
I think it's more of a mindset when you enter a relationship. I used to begin relationships just to go on dates and hang out, but now I am looking for the qualities in someone that would guarantee a successful marriage before I began the relationship. I suppose the girl I am in a relationship with now is the one I hope to marry, where before it was more about the dating.
 
i agree with the above. ^_^ my church believes in courting. now we're a little hardcore so we're not allowed to be on ANY dates alone and we have to go through counseling with the pastors the whole time we're courting. ^_^ but thats just out type of courting. lol. its just a whole mind set thing. i mean if a guy asks you out cause he just wants a quick date and you say "oh i don't date, i court" well hes gonna think twice about it. and you can save yourself the trouble of getting attached to some guy that doesn't even plan on proposing to you. ^_^
 
I see dating as the process of getting to know someone better. If you already know someone fairly well, lets say you are friends from school or church or work or somrthing, then you may be able to skip dating and go straight to courtship. You court the person you want to marry, but you have to get to knpw thwm before you decide you want to marry them.
 
In my opinion courting is the process that should be done before dating, its a very thorough way to get to know a person before indulging yourself into a relationship. Once you're done courting and you find a good match then you can move on to dating, which is more intimate. ( I say more intimate because when you court someone you are usually never alone with that person, you should have friends or family with you to hold you accountable and to gain their approval.) When you are in a relationship up until marriage, that to me is considered dating. Again this is my opinion :)
 
I agree with you, myredemmerlives. i supposed courting is the getting to know someone process, to see if ur even compatible enough to entertain the idea of dating. this makes sense. and then dating would lead to marriage...so courting--->dating--->marriage...got it! lol thanks everyone;)

I always thought of dates as getting to know someone, and then courting as the actual pre marraige part. HHHMMMM. Maybe we should find an expert.
 
I uderestand the two words the same way like MYREDEEMERLIVES22. Courting is the process when you try to hold the other ones interest, to learn more about him/her and of course pray that God would show you if he/she is really the one for you. Dating is preparation for marriage. Although I know some churches and pastors deprecate dating as something profane and thay teach, that Christians may only court and than marry.
 
The whole community we are living in has been built on courtship and it is amazing to see marriages that are built from the success from the start. Dating has zero accountability. Courtship has rules, structure, accountability and guidance. I blogged about it a couple of days ago
 
The rules vary from couple to couple but are set out in a meeting between the man, the woman and the parents of both. They set understandings of how the courtship will be conducted and put restrictions on time spent together, physical intimacy, chaperoning etc.
 
I used to court all the time with different people,for I had no shame when it came to courting.Men,women,I didn't care.I'd meet them on the basketball court,tennis court,and volleyball court.I was courting all the time.I got to say I do enjoy courting over dating.
 
DanuckInUSA, well this remebers me "rules" used in my sisters church, but there they are really very strict.
 
So this comes to the idea of Christian families being strong. Fathers of children should be striving to be loving but to help guide their children into a blessed union. Strict rules may not be bad if they bring about a stronger marriage.
 
If you don't mind me asking, what is courting? I've never heard of it until I read this thread.
 
Courting is not about dating. It is about a young man saying that he wants to marry a women. You can not court until you are ready to provide for the woman and your children. The courtship is an agreement between both families governing how the couple will interact. The parents offer guidance in how the couple can become prepared for marriage and they all agree on limitations of interaction and physical intimacy in order to keep marriage pure.
 
The dictonary defines courting and dating as such:

Court/Courting

1. woo somebody: to try to win somebody's love (dated)
2. be sweethearts: to spend time together in a romantic relationship as a prelude to getting married (dated)

Date/Dating

1.activity of going on dates: the activity of going out regularly with somebody as a social or romantic partner
 
Yeah I was going less with dictionary and more with the traditional ritual of courtship.
