New crack pipe vending machines in Vancouver aim to curb spread of disease


In an attempt to prevent the spread of disease, a Canadian non-profit installed the country’s first-ever crack pipe vending machines in Vancouver, CTV reported.

With the vending machines, drug users can purchase as many Pyrex crack pipes as they need for $0.25 each – a measure experts hope will curb rates of diseases spread by shared drug paraphernalia.

The two vending machines were installed by the non-profit Portland Hotel Society's Drug Users Resource Center (DURC) in Vancouver's Washington Market.

“Various studies show a correlation between HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases with crack pipe use. People can have sores on their lips, and [get diseases] from cracked or broken pipes,” Mark Townsend, an addictions worker with the Portland Hotel Society, told FoxNews.com.

Townsend said that although PHS would rather crack users choose to detox or go to rehab, they also want to provide users with clean equipment, so they don't get sick or potentially die. The machines, which are covered in colorful polka dots, are meant to create a conversation about the positive benefits of harm reduction.

"A hepatitis C infection can cost [the health care system] anywhere from $200,000 to $1.4 million; that’s a lot of money a 25-cent crack pipe can mitigate," Townsend said.

While the Canadian federal government has resisted harm reduction methods like this one in the past, the vending machines were allowed under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

In all likelihood, there is a correlation between having HIV/AIDS and using crack pipes. But I don't think they are getting the infection from the crack pipe, at least not 99% of the time. (It should still be possible if someone has a bleeding sore on their mouth.)

The more likely answer is that crack addicts are prone to other types of risky behavior, from whence comes the HIV infection.

Drug use is horrible and I wish these people would go to rehab and such. That being said- I think it's pretty great of them to supply the equipment so as to curb the diseases being spread by infected equipment.. just a thought.

As much flack as we give those in government, I do think we have to understand that they are often stuck deciding between one, two, three or more bad options. Meaning no matter which option they choose, it's going to have some outcome none will like. Yet regardless, an option must be chosen.

Toronto did put out crack pipe vending machines first, and they all had Mayor Rob Ford's picture on each one with the words "Rob Ford Approves of This Crack Pipe 'Lets-Get-The-Party-Started' Good-Times Dispenser"

We don't have the vending machines anymore because the suppliers couldn't restock each machine quick enough to Rob Ford's "satisfaction"

The libs are using tax money to subsidize handing out crack pipes to prevent HIV infection something crack pipes don't even spread. Sure statistically, people who smoke crack are twice as likely contract HIV as non-crack smokers; however, as Alli Kraus (access coordinator at Glide Health Services) explains: crack use is a big driver of HIV infections because crack addiction leads to a lot of unprotected prostitution to get the money to buy the crack! That's why. Dumb liberals. So dumb. Replace the crack machine with a condom machine and you might prevent some HIV infections from occurring. Duh!

I second the sentiments of others here.

I've heard of a needle exchange, but I don't think crack pipes are the disease vector for HIV, though some googling says Hep C maybe, but Hep C is a lot more virulent.

I don't know how this is giong to curb HIV infection at all, maybe some hep c, but by far the greater risk factor is the other behaviors that addicts engage in to support their addiction and during the throes of their addiction when their judgment is compromised.

They make it illegal for public schools to remove boys from girl's bathrooms and girls from boy's bathrooms. They pass laws to replace curriculum designed to create economically viable young people and replace it with immoral homosexual indoctrination that touts pedophiles as "heroes" to the children.

They talk about unity and then unethically wield government agencies as weapons against everyone that has a different view than them.

They put the worst murderers into our penal reform institutions for life and then wonder why they turn into dangerous violent places where little real reform occurs.

They spend to the point they bankrupt every city, county, state, and nation they gain control of and at the end they have nothing to show for it but a large number of poor uneducated people on welfare producing street gangs.

Senselessness, carelessness, hopelessness, an effortless attempt. Clearly the source of the diseases was not the crack pipe. If they really cared enough to prevent the spread of disease and would rather the crack head community seek Detox or rehabilitation centers they would enforce it. What they need to do is formulate an all natural addiction antidote which nullifies and wipes clean an addiction as before they encountered the usage. Then provide it once and for all free of charge.
