However, they can occasionally surprise you and use the bathroom in a mystery place. Not a happy camper right now as I clean the hardwood floor with paper and soapy water before bed.

In the video it said the possum died in a year, so I had to look it up. The lifespan is 1-2 years, the longest ever recorded in captivity is 4. That really surprised me. Did yours only live a year?
As I thought I remembered, they are marsupials, and the only ones in N America. Zoologists believe marsupials originated in S America and crossed over Antartica into Australia when it was one big land mass Gondwanan. I had wondered if there was a ship voyage that carried them.
The last opossum I raised for education and spreading the gospel. God gave it 4 good happy years. It was an exceptionally long lifespan for a possum. Most important is that many people will live forever because the Lord used it in that way.
You are right. As to N. America, the Virginia Opossum is our only marsupial. That makes them special as far as I'm concerned. Too many people try to hit them with their cars because they think they are just another kind of rodent. What they are doing is actually assuring that the rodent, tick and pest populations thrive by eliminating their biggest predator. I caught a mouse in the trap in my basement and Lil' Fluffed gobbled it up like the tastiest treat she ever had.
I doubt if any opossums could travel large cold land masses free of shelter and small mammals. I do however think that some traveled along with other wildlife all over the planet after Noah landed. Then genetic variations occured in populations as the continents divided. Australia has such varieties that didn't go extinct as in other parts of the world.
Bless you for caring about opossums! One of my fave critters. I wince whenever I see videos of people carrying them by their tail. There are a few of them hanging around here. One was inside nosing around a few nights ago. It had gotten in while I wasn't looking and nosed through the kitchen rubbish. It was so cute that I would have let it nose around some more, but it moseyed on back out.

Whenever I see a YouTuber holding one up by the tail, I let them know the proper way to move them because that can hurt an adult. Usually it's by giving them space and time to leave the area like you did.
I'm pretty happy when I see one around here. I once caught a mouse in the trap in the garage and asked God if He would send a hungry opossum to get that meal. It was getting dark outside and carried it to the back yard. I had it by the tail and tossed it under my blueberry bush. Guess what I saw as soon as I let go of the tail?
A precious little momma possum with babies. The mouse booped her on the nose. I didn't even see her until I let go of the mouse!
That answer to prayer was perfectly timed and the perfect place for the perfect opossum. I prayed for that cute little one months earlier when she was just a little thing barely on her own. I prayed for her then and this was the first time I saw her since. Now she was barely grown and with her first litter.
What a special blessing.

I love your opossum story! Critters are quite a blessing! And baby critters are precious. I was dealing with some trying things last year. Every evening I'd go outside and feed the woodchucks. Watching them eat and climb trees was very calming and helped me a lot. There's other critters to watch right out in the yard, but they were the highlight of the year.
The opossum venturing inside wasn't too much of a surprise. I've had critters mosey inside before. The resident raccoon, who I call Fuzz Butt, has ventured inside a few times. Also a couple of snakes and a bird. They all ventured back outside. In the fantasy part of my mind I live in a cozy teepee by a creek. No perps around, just critters. So, it's nice to get a bit of that in the real world.

Well, Antartica wasn't cold at the time. The super-landmass Gondwanan was believed to be around 600-530 million years ago. Opossum fossils are dated back to 20 million years ago.
I've seen cows do that but first time to see an elephant kick. I hope it doesn't do that when it grows up. That lady will be in the next county. Lol
Some time after 1am last night I heard sounds outside. Unfortunately in my area it's not uncommon to find someone up to no good in your yard. I headed outside...armed, of course. It was a wee bit foggy. All the suspicious sounds ceased. I shined a light and seen glowing eyes moving around the yard. Opossum. Then I heard a screech. I often go for evening walks and since I live on the edge of the country I am always hearing and seeing owls (mostly barred owls, and occasionally great horned owls). But, oddly enough, I've never heard a barn owl in person. So, at first I wasn't sure what I was hearing. I mean, there is a woman not far away who often screams in a possessed manner, so it wouldn't have surprised me it was some strange person screeching. I kept standing outside listening to the screech until a noisy train came along. Back inside, I pulled up sounds of barn owls to verify that that is what I heard.
I feel blessed that after heading outside to confront a perp, I was met with wildlife instead!
The owl I heard was not continuous like this, but short and intermittent with the exact same sound...
