In some churches the pastor is just a hired man to over see the activities of the church. Basically every thing he does is overseen by a board of the church that keep the pastor in line. If he starts preaching hard and starts stepping on the toes of his bosses they will call a vote and fire him.
Those type of churches need to understand that the pastor should be their shepherd, and they should follow him. The pastor should hear the voice of God by the Power of the Holy Spirit and lead the church by those words.
A hireling will cut and run when trouble shows up, but a Good Shepherd will stand his ground and fight for his flock.
People are you letting your pastor Shepherd, or is he just your hireling? The health and safety of your church depends on the Leader, God's man, not your employee.

11 “I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.
12 The worker who is paid to keep the sheep is different from the shepherd. The paid worker does not own the sheep. So when he sees a wolf coming, he runs away and leaves the sheep alone. Then the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them.
13 The man runs away because he is only a paid worker. He does not really care for the sheep.
