"Dan. 7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns."
"Saw in the night visions," means darkness and troublesome times.
"Behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceeding; and it had great iron teeth." This is the Roman Empire. (Gold is the Babylonian Empire. Silver is the Median and Persian Empire. Brass is the Greek Empire. Iron is the Roman Empire.)
"It devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it." What lands Rome didn't outright conquer, it controlled by force of it's awesome power. Any vestiges of prior rule and authority in these conquered lands were eliminated. All came to fear the retribution of Rome.
"And it was diverse from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns." The Roman Empire was powerful in its day. Its method of rule became the pattern of governing for many subsequent empires to follow. All these empires (nations) that followed the Roman Empire are lumped together as this fourth beast with ten horns. This nation is one of the ten horns. We are spun off of the British Empire which is another horn.
