Part of a believers “God Breathed Spirit” is an irresistible impulse to pay the debts owed for our sins. Left undressed, these unpaid debts diminish our soul and hampers our human relationships. This is why I use of the plural form of debt; it’s owed to God but also to the other humans we have harmed.

We acknowledge all sin are offenses against God and create intolerable separation. In faith we confess and seek forgiveness through the grace of his Son. But really, is that enough to satisfy our souls. We believe we are forgiven, but do we feel restored? I maintain we cannot walk away dusting off our hands thinking, “Well that takes care of that!” In our heart debt remains, not held by God, but held against ourselves. In our soul we need something more.

God understood this from the very beginning. Is this why He provided the sacrificial system for early believers? God’s people in the First testament understood a broken spirit and contrite heart were the requirements of salvation. The personal cost of the sacrifice satisfied that other troublesome debt.

Christs blood is the requirement for our forgiveness. Our sacrificial following of Jesus is our cost to satisfy our own troublesome debt. In His incarnation he demonstrated exactly what those sacrifices are and how we are to make them. Alone, they do not bring salvation, but they do satisfy our God breathed soul debt.
