LOL! What are you talking about Democrats held the presidential office for 8 years. President Barack Obama won twice! Also,

for the 2016 election Trump won major key swing states in margins less than 1%. This past election was not a blowout comparatively to Obama/McCain election or Obama/Romney...especially the 2008 election was a complete blowout.

In addition, special interest are a major problem for both parties. American Politics as of right now is falling apart not due to one party but both of them.

True. Both Parties are in bed with the Special Interest Groups, and have been for, well, for the life of our Government.

I can't believe I agree with Thomas Frank about something.

I would put it a different way, though- Democrats are more identitarian than Republicans, generally speaking. They doubled down on identitarianism at the expense of appeals to the Rust Belt working class.

As a result, Trump broke the blue wall and down ballot candidates crushed it. Will they hold onto it for the midterms? I think that's up the Democrats.

If they focus on the unhinged elements at their base, they will be toast.
 
Presidential races are not the greatest barometer for overall political success. Generally speaking, if you have one term, you get two. And if you get two, you win by a hefty margin the second go-around.

Obama's party was stomped in the 2009 specials/gubernatorials, the 2010 mid-terms, and the 2014 midterms. When 2016 rolled and his name was off-ticket, critical states were taken off the board.

On the state and local level, the red tide has continued to rise. Naturally, Republicans will experience some attrition, maybe a good deal unless they make 2018 a landmark year for legislation.

But the Democratic Party is in a pretty bad spot right now. Not "fold up the tent" bad. But bad.

Mind you, I think that if Trump ran toe-to-toe with Obama and his 2008 team, 2008 Obama would have sent him packing.

I'm still amazed by that campaign when I read about it. An almost seamless union of field, coms, and finance. Awesome branding.

Bad policies, but crazy good politics where his own races were involved.
