Sadness over an event or factor is a normal reaction, it is not of the enemy and can even mean you are upright and not happy with the world around you.
Depression however is the enemy perversion of sadness, it stands to exploit sadness and institute a life long dominion of it over you, beyond what is normal or healthy.
It relies on strongholds in the person to continue it's campaign, where as human sadness can be cured with aiding to the reason for it, depression perverts the feeling into a standing feeling, with no physically changeable reason to stand, many people fail to beat this spirit because they treat it like sadness, looking to correct problems to destroy the reason for it being, when it has attached itself to not tangible issues to maintain convincing the person to continue to allow the spirits presence.
The strongholds are based on the most hard to correct issues, so it can reason existence beyond what you can cure, examples are, the oppression of man in general, the existence of things that hurt men, an event that happened in the past which can't be undone, it uses these types of things which seem impossible to solve as the basis for it's campaign, to make the person feel as if they can't beat it and those who come to help the person beat it feel they can't beat it. it then takes seat and tells the person about all sorts of things that upset them, and leads them to believe they should be depressed until all these things are solved too.
How do you beat an enemy that hides behind the things you can not change? the answer is to not be distracted by these diversions and impossible missions it tells you must be completed before it can be beaten, and go straight for the enemy himself.
tell the person under oppression that they do not have to base their happiness in the world around them, if they can change something that has been weighing on them, then do not procrastinate heal the issue, but if the issue can't be healed by them, or you, tell them that it is not their thing to concern themselves with, that if they are made a limited being, then what is beyond their ability inherently is not their responsibility or thing to feel guilt over, they don't have to feel selfish feeling happy with these wrong things in the world, doing the things that cause them joy even while people suffer when it is beyond their control is not conceited, the person only controls so much in this world, they are allowed to look out for their own interests and wants, and not doing so because things exist beyond their control only leads to them being unhappy as well, and would cause less joy to be in the world. help them take the weight of these things off their mind with logic and reason, they are not responsible if people in other countries have less access to food or resources than they do, it's depressing to think about, but it's not your fault or their fault, there's no reason to loose sleep over it or hold on to stress over it, if sadness over it makes you feel convicted to help, go help if you can, it will cause happiness, but not being able to, and not even looking only at whats physically possible, but when determining if you can look also at the toll it would take if you went and tried, and whether you can afford it without putting yourself in irreputable damage, but if there's something not manageable it serves no one to sit at home being depressed about not doing it. Believe in the Creator? believe also then that he takes no pleasure in these upsetting things too, or has caused them for His purpose, and if you can not solve these issues he is aware of them and your desire to see them end, and trust Him when you see they are not ending to believe that they continue for a reason.
If the problem is a past event in the person's life, remind them it was in the past, ask them if it reoccured, if they say yes, ask them more about it and try to find a way you can help ensure it will not reoccur, if you can stop it from reoccurring, you can have the person actively solve their issue, and if they say no, tell them they lived all their life, and only encountered something so upsetting one time, remind them before and after the event were years where things did not get that bad, and while it is discomforting to now it can happen, point out that it is the exception to the good, and the good not the exception to the one event.
